Shasta County, California
Shasta County was officially organized on February 18, 1850, as one of California’s original counties. It was named after Mount Shasta, which in turn was named for the Shasta people, a Native American tribe indigenous to the region.
Originally, Mount Shasta lay within the county’s boundaries, but it was later reassigned to Siskiyou County to the north. The mountain’s iconic 14,179-foot peak remains a defining landmark, visible throughout much of Shasta County.
The county seat is Redding, a city that grew rapidly during the California Gold Rush, when miners and settlers flooded the area in search of fortune. The region’s rich natural resources—gold, timber, and fertile land—attracted diverse communities and helped shape its economic and cultural development.
Shasta County has preserved a wealth of historical records, including:
- Birth, marriage, and death records dating back to the 1850s
- Court and probate records from 1880 onward
- Census and land records beginning in 1850
