FamilySearch.org

FamilySearch.org is a genealogy web site that provides historical records, a one-world family tree and extensive genealogy-related help files and videos. In addition it is associated with a network of Family History Centers, FamilySearch Libraries and the Family History Library.

Search for Genealogy Records

Free research is enabled by the FamilySearch Search Tool that contains over two thousand on-line collections of records from all over the world. All of the United States Censuses (except 1890 which was destroyed) are available.

FamilySearch Family Tree

Registration is required to use the free FamilySearch Family Tree with over a billion people in it. This is a full featured genealogy tool that has a design similar to Wikipedia. It is a little offputting to understand that anyone can alter anyone's tree, but this a collaboration tool rather than an individual's family tree. Many Wiki articles and videos are available that describe it. The system also allows documents and photos to be associated with individuals. Living people can not be viewed, similar to other genealogy family tree sites.

Mendocino County FamilySearch Wiki

The FamilySearch Research Wiki contains a wide variety of genealogy how-to information. Some of our Mendocino CAGenWeb website draws from that information. The Mendocino County Wiki is an excellent resource to help you do excellent Mendocino County genealogical research.

Family History Centers

There are Family History Centers all over the world and there are three in Mendocino County; Fort Bragg, Ukiah and Willits and one in neighboring Lakeport. A Family History Center Locator will help you find a local FHC. One tool they all feature is the Family History Portal that features free access to web sites like Fold3, NewspaperArchive, Ancestry, MyHeritage and FindMyPast (and others), for free.

FamilySearch Libraries

FamilySearch Libraries are so-called "Super" Family History Centers. Twelve exist in the U.S. The closest to Mendocino is the Oakland FamilySearch Library.

Family History Library

The most extensive genealogical library in the world is the FHL in Salt Lake City, Utah. A Wikipedia article explains in detail. Before visiting, many people use the FamilySearch Catalog and search for Mendocino County documents, to see if any exist that might help your research.

FamilySearch.org is a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
