This is the first death record in Stanislaus County.  This was not
recorded until 1873 when death records were apparently required.


Turlock Tribune, Feb., 8, 1928-SWANSON

Mrs. Johanna Christina Swanson 71, wife of the late Swan Anders SWANSON,
died at her home west of Hilmar Tuesday morning, February 7, after an
extended illness.  She was a resident of Sweden, coming to this country
in 1880.
Mrs. Swanson first located in Oakland, Nebraska, and made her home there
for eight years, after which she moved to Idaho Falls, making her
residence there also for eight years, prior to moving to the Turlock
district twenty-six years ago.
Before moving to Hilmar Mrs. Swanson lived for a time in Turlock.  She
was a member of the Hilmar Mission church.  She is survived by Mrs.
Augusta   E. SPITSEN, Mrs. Lydia  ? LUNDELL of Hilmar, Mrs. Ruth E
MAYFIELD of Lake Tahoe, three daughters and one son, Paul M. L. SWANSON
of Hilmar.  She was preceded by one daughter,  the late Nina R. Smith
and her husband.
Funeral services will be held from the Hilmar Mission church Saturday
afternoon, February 11 at two o'clock, with the Rev. William Hawkinson,
pastor in charge.  Interment will be in the family plot in the Hilmar
Mission cemetery, under the direction of the Geckier Funeral Home.

Bodies of 2 Servicemen Returned Here

The bodies of two soldiers both of whom were killed in action on Okinawa within 11 days of each other have been returned to Turlock for burial.
Wilkins C. HAMLOW, a native of Turlock, was killed April 11, 1945 with the 32nd Infamtry. He had attended Gratton grammar school and junior high and high school in Vallejo.  He was living in Denair when he went into the service and was 20 years old at the time of his death.
He is survived by his parents, Carl a. and Opal HAMLOW of Denair, a sister, Lorene HAMLOW, Denair; and a brother Aubrey, who is in college at San Luis Obispo.

Burl W. WELSH, a native of Oklahoma was killed in action April 22, 1945.  He entered the army from Texas in 1944 and was trained at Camp Fannin, Texas from where he went overseas.
Welsh was a member of the Assembly of God.  He is survived by his wife Edith Welsh TODD; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. W. WELSH; a daughter, Jean WELSH, a son James Edward WELSH, all of Turlock.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at the Norton mortuary. Interment services, at the Turlock cemetery, will be under the direction of the American Legion.
Arrangements for funeral services for both men are under the direction of the Norton mortuary.

January 1946

CHARLES WESLEY RITCHIE, 62,resident in the Delhi vicinity for 26 years, died in a Merced hospital Wednesday after a long illness.
Native of Gilroy, RITCHIE leaves a sister, MRS, CARRIE PERKINS, San Jose, and two brothers , HARRY C.RITCHIE,  Turlock, and CARL RITCHIE, Delhi.
Funeral rites will be conducted in the W. C. Bradford funeral chapel in Merced at 2 p. m. Friday.
Burial will be in the Winton cemetery.

January 1946

JOSEPH ADAMS, 76, resident of Turlock for 35 years, died Wednesday morning at his home south of Turlock,
A native of Persia, ADAMS moved to Canada in 1903. He moved to Turlock in 1911.
He is survived by his widow, MRS NARGIS ADAMS,  and eight children.
His sons are CAPT. EPHRAIM ADAMS, USA, Detroit; MANASHA ADAMS, Turlock; and  JOHN ADAMS, Turlock, JOEL ADAMS, Turlock.
The four daughters are MRS. MARY BENJAMIN, Turlock;  MRS. VICTORIA DAVID, Turlock; MRS ADA  LEE YOUNG, Los Altos, and MRS. MABEL MERZA,  San Francisco.
He also leaves 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are pending. Arrangements, made by the Hale funeral chapel, wo;; be announced on arrival of EPHRIAM ADAMS from Detroit.

Turlock Journal, 1946

MRS, Elias Svenson, 88, Denver, Colo., former resident of Turlock, died at her home early Saturday morning.
She is survived by her husband,  ELIAS  SVENSON, Denver, a sister and five children.
MRS. SVENSON’S  sister is MRS. S. A. HULTMAN, Turlock.
The children are DR. GEORGE E. SVENSON, Temple City;  PAUL SVENSON, Oakland; MRS. WINNIE SHENK, Wheatland, Wyo; MRS. FRANCIS NELSON, Denver, and MRS ESTHER TOVEY, Denver.
Funeral services will be held in Denver Tuesday afternoon.

Funeral services for Stanley EYRE, 17, who died an infantile paralysis
victim Monday evening, will be conducted at the Hale funeral chapel at 2
p. m. Thursday, with REV.T. W. LYMAN, pastor of the First Christian
church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Turlock cemetery.

Turlock Journal, Feb. 1946

Hiram Homes SMITH, 70, resident of Turlock for 39 years, died Tuesday
evening at his home after a brief illness.
A native of Ontario, Canada, SMITH came to this country in 1903 and was
agent for the Southern Pacific railroad in Milton.  Four years later he
moved to Madera.
He came to Turlock in 1907 and was engaged in the real estate business
for several years.  Recently he  had been employed by a local cannery.
Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Iva May SMITH, Turlock.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday in the Drake Memorial
chapel, with Rev. H. H. ALLEN officiating.
Burial will be in the Turlock cemetery.

John FAGUNDES, 77, farm laborer in the Central district, died in a
Modesto hospital Thursday evening.  He had been ill some time.
Born in the Azores islands, he had come to this country at the age of
18, having resided in Sacramento and northern California until moving to
the Central district here 12 years ago.
FAGUNDES lived with the Antone BORGES family.
Rosary services will be recited at the Hale funeral chapel at 8:30 p. m.
Sunday.  Requiem mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart church at
10 a. m. Monday; with Rev. Father D. B. O'RIODAN officiating.  Burial
will be in the Turlock cemetery.

Mrs. Ada Julius ABRAHAMSON, 64, Hilmar, died Thursday afternoon at her
home after a long illness.
A resident of the Hilmar district since 1919, Mrs. ABRAHAMSON was born
in Antelope county, Neb.  She moved to Louisiana in 1913 before coming
to California.
She is survived by five daughters;  Mrs. Gerald WELLS, Turlock; Mrs.
Wendell ANDERSON, Turlock; Mrs. Reuben SPITSEN, Turlock; Mrs. Clifford
LISLE,  Livingston, and Mrs. Jack BARKER, Alameda.
Mrs. ABRAHAMSON also leaves a sister, Mrs. Alma BROBERG, Nebraska, and
nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday in the Drake Memorial
chapel with Rev. Dr. M. A. ODELL, pastor of the Berea Lutheran church,
officiating.
Burial will be in the Hilmar Mission cemetery.

PERRY ALLEN KINSER, 53, 434 Orange Street, died early Thursday at his
home after a long illness.
A native of Stanislaus county, KINSER lived in the Denair and Turlock
districts all his life.
He was a member of the First Christian church of Turlock.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ella MONROE, Turlock, and one son,
Everett KINSER, Marblemount, Wash.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Hale funeral chapel at 2 p. m.
Monday, with Rev. T. W. LYMAN and Rev. J. W. RODMAN officiating.
Interment will be in the family plot in the Turlock cemetery.

Turlock Journal February 14, 1946

Knut Karl HAGGSTROM, 65 Hughson, passed away Wednesday afternoon in a
local hospital after an extended illiness.
A native of Boden, Sweden, HAGGSTROM first came to Turlock in 1918 and
moved to Hughson a year later. Prior to that time, he had lived in
Cheyenne, Wyo., and St. Paul, Neb.
He came to this country in 1905, when he settled in Monson, Maine. He
moved to the Midwest in 1907.
HAGGSTROM was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church here and the
Jenny Lind Lodge, V.O.A.
He also belonged to the Turlock camp, Modern Woodmen of America.
Surviving are his widow, MRS. Marion  HAGGSTROM, two sisters and a
brother.
His sisters,  MRS.  Alma DALENE  and MRS. Lydia HANSON, both live in
Sweden, and a brother, Reburt HAGGSTROM, resides in Wallbeck, Neb.
Funeral  arrangements  will be made by the Drake memorial chapel.

FRANK THORNTON SUCCUMBS AT 74

FRANK A. THORNTON, 74, resident of the Turlock district for the past six
years, died Wednesday afternoon after a long illness at his home east of
here.
A native of Iowa, THORNTON moved to Pasadena in 1882. He  later lived in
Riverside and Calaveras counties.
He was a member of the Baptist church of Hemet and a member of the
Knights of the Macabees lodge, also at Hemet.
THORNTON,  is  survived by his widow, MRS. EVELYN THORNTON, Turlock,
and  five children. The children are GEORGE N. THORNTON, Exchequer Dam;
JOSEPH E. THORNTON, Stockton; MRS. LILLIAN CHITWOOD,   Aberdeen,  Wash.;
MRS. MARY J. BRYANT,   Aberdeen,  and MRS. MILDRED  A.  HOWARD,
Pacific  Beach, Wash.
Also surviving are his brother,   JOSEPH  N. THORNTON, Chico; seven
grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral arrangements await arrival of relatives from Washington and will
be announced later by the Hale funeral chapel.

Hughson Man Succumbs

After a long illness, John William DANIEL, 72 died Thursdy afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Levi GAY, Hughson.
DANIEL had lived in Hughson for about a year.  A native of Harrison, Ark., he lived in Arkansas until coming to California four years ago.  Prior to moving to Hughson, he lived in Chino and Ontario.
He is Survived by nine children Ralph L. DANIEL, Duncan, Ariz.; John R. DANIEL, Hughson; William W. DANIEL, U. S. Army; Mrs. Will JONES, Mulberry, Ark.; Mrs. Irven  HARGROVE, Chino; Mrs Arch PAUL, Harrison, Ark.; Mrs. Theodore WHITE, Duncan, Ariz.; Mrs. Benny BRUCE, Carthage, Mo.; and Mrs. GAY.
Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Nancy ROBINSON, Winslow , Ariz.; and Mrs. Elmer HOFFMAN, Wagnor Okla., and two brothers , Riley DANIEL and Elmer DANIEL, both of Van Buren, Ark.
Funeral  arrangements  will  be  made  by the Drake Memorial chapel.

Mrs. Carrie BAIR
A resident of the Delhi district for the last decade, Mrs. Carrie Mae BAIR, died at the home of a son, Lowell J. BAIR, in Modesto Sunday
Afternoon.
Born at Atlanta, Ga., she moved to Oklahoma as a child and lived there
until 1912, when she moved to New Mexico.  She and her husband moved to
Texas in 1929 and the Delhi district in 1935.
Her husband, William, three children, Leona Grace CONRAD, Delhi, Lowell
J. BAIR, Modesto, and Wesley D. BAIR, Delhi, and two sisters and
brothers, Mamie LAWRENCE, Amarillo, Texas, Beulah GRIFFIN, Canyon,
Texas, G. W. HARWOOD, Canyon, and J. T. HARWOOD, Albuquerque, N. M.,
survive.
Mrs BAIR WAS A MEMBER OF THE Church of Christ, Delhi.
Funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. Clint LOVELADY at the
Hale Funeral home at 2 p. m. Friday.
Burial will be in the Turlock cemetery.

Cinda A. ROOF
Mrs. Cinda A. Roof, 71, native of Pennsylvania, and Turlock area
resident, died Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John
E. HANSON, near Hughson, after an extended illness.
Mrs. ROOF lived in Pittsburgh, Penn., until she moved to Antioch 18
years ago.  After the death of her husband, the late Charles ROOF, in
1940, she moved to southern California, then to Modesto.
Surviving are two children, Mrs. HANSON, Hughson, and John W. GILLISPIE,
Pittsburgh, Pa. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Martha THOMAS,
Carleton, Nebr., and Susan B. SMITH, Cresapstown, Md., and two
grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be made by the Hale Funeral chapel.

Antonio F. NOVA, 72, a native of Flores, Azores Islands, and a resident
of Turlock for the past 15 years,  died Tuesday afternoon in a Modesto
hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. NOVO came to the United States at the age of 18.  He lived in
Stanislaus and Merced counties for several years and then moved to
Austin, Nev., where he lived for 12 years.  He returned to California
and lived in Stockton for 19 years prior to returning to Turlock 15
years ago.
He was a member of the UPEC lodge in Stockton.
Surviving are a brother, Joseph F. NOVO, Turlock, and seven nieces and
nephews.
Rosary services will be recited at the Hale Funeral chapel Thursday at 8
p. m.  A requiem mass will be offered at Sacred Heart church Friday at
9:30 a. m. with the Rev. M. B. CORDEIRO officiating.
Interment will follow in the Turlock cemetery.

Ernest BOWER, 59, of Turlock, died Saturday morning in a Modesto
hospital after a long illness.
Born in Jasper county,  Mo., BOWERS came to California in 1929.  He
lived in Riverbank for five years and came to Turlock a year ago.
Surviving him are his widow, Lena, of Turlock; five daughters, Bonnie,
Turlock, Hazel WILFONG and Rena Mae WATERWORTH, both of Oregon, Winona
EASTERHOUT, of Planada, and Mabel RENNIE, Merced.  He also leaves 12
grandchildren; a sister, Mollie MEFERRON, and a brother, Elmer BOWER,
both of Missouri.
Services will be held Tuesday, June 28, at 10 a. m. in Norton's
mortuary, with the Rev. S. R. DUNLOP, pastor of the First Baptist
church, officiating.
Burial will be in the Turlock cemetery.

Mrs. A. E. LUNDELL Of Hilmar Dies

Esther Nelson LUNDELL, 51, a resident of the Turlock area for the past 40 years, died Tuesday evening in a local hospital following a long illness.
She was a native of Bessemer, Pa., and lived in Northport, Mich. for a year before coming to the Turlock area in 1909.  She has been a resident of Turlock and Hilmar ever since.
Mrs. LUNDELL graduated from the Samuel Merritt School of nursing at Oakland and was a member of the Youngstown Colony church until it was dissolved. She has been a member of the Hilmar Mission Covenant church for the past 20 years.
Funeral Friday
She married Arvid E. LUNDELL of Hilmar in July 1924. Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Clarice LUNDELL, Chicago, and Arlene LUNDELL, Turlock; two sisters, Mrs. Inez DAHL,
San Jose, and Ethel NELSON, Turlock, and one brother,  Axel NELSON, Turlock.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday from the Norton mortuary with the Rev. C. G. STROM of the Hilmar Mission Covenant church officiating.

Anna PERSON Dies
After Illness

Anna PERSON, 82, a native of Sweden, died in her Turlock home Tuesday morning after a short illness.
Mrs. PERSON came to the United States when she was two years old and lived on a homestead in Nebraska. She came to Turlock in 1918.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary PERSON, Turlock ; a son, Oscar PERSON, Fresno; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21, at 2 p. m. in the Norton Mortuary with interment in the Turlock cemertery.

C. S. MINER, 89, Succumbs Here

Columbus Sylvester MINER, 89, a Ceres resident for the past 26 years,
died in a local hospital this morning following a short illness.
Miner operated a grocery in Ceres until his retirement in 1941.  A
native of Salem, Mo., he practiced law in Missouri and Oklahoma for a
number of years.  He served as circuit court clerk at Salem, Mo., for
four years.  He resided in Cordell, Okla., until moving to Montana in
1914.  He came to Ceres in 1925.
He was a member of Ceres Lodge 532, FAM.
His wife, the late Sina Lee MINER, preceded him in death in 1905.
He leaves five sons, Roscoe, Felton; Escoe, Turlock; Clifford, Crows
Landing, Carl, Ceres, and Bruce, Modesto; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys
NELSON, Patterson; Mrs. Mabel VALK, Farmington, and Mrs. Myrtle HUDSON,
Oakland; 25 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the Hale Funeral
chapel, with Ceres Lodge, FAM. Officiating. Chelsey LUDDEN will be
acting worshipful master.  Interment will follow in Ceres cemetery.

Sidney R. HOLT dies in Oakland
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Hale Funeral
chapel for Sidney R. HOLT, 49, a former Turlock resident who died Friday
night in an Oakland hospital following a short illness.
Rev. H. H. ALLEN, retired Methodist minister, will officiate.
Internment will follow in Turlock cemetery.
HOLT came to Turlock in 1912 and attended local schools.  He moved to
Oakland in 1922 and resided there until his death.  He was a native of
South Dakota.
He was a member of Fruitvale  Lodge, FAM, at Oakland and also of the
Butchers' Union, Local 120, Oakland.
He leaves a daughter,  Mrs. Norma  D. FROST, Oakland; his mother, Mrs.
Cora B. HOLT, Turlock; three brothers, Clarence J. HOLT, Woodside;
Emery J. HOLT, Fair Oaks, and Raymond E. HOLT, Woodside; three sisters,
Mrs. Alice GORDON and Mrs. Mae JOHNSON, both of Turlock, and Mrs. Vesta
HENDRICKSON, Portland, Oregon, and one grandchild.


Obituary from the Westside Index, Newman, CA Tues. Nov. 8, 1921, p.1

DEATH OF GUSTAV PRIEN AT LOS BANOS
News was received this morning of the death at Los Banos yesterday of Gustav F. Prien, an uncle of John and August Prien of Newman and Gus Prien of Columbia.
The deceased was 58 years of age, and a native of Holstein, coming to this country at 18, and to Newman in 1910, moving to Los Banos soon after.
Funeral Services will be held at the Davis undertaking parlors here on Thursday at 2 p.m.


Funeral rites for Mrs. Rose E. Barnhizer, 82, who died Sunday, May 5, 1957 in the Oakdale Municipal Hospital will be held in Pascoe Booth Mortuary.  Rev. John Bishop of the Free Methodist Church will officiate and interment will be in the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery.

Born in Iowa, Mrs. Barnhizer had resided in River Bank, Calif., before moving to Oakdale seven years ago.  Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Moore of Lineville, Iowa, Mrs. Lorene Nivins of Tracy, Mrs. Lorrell Walker of Oakdale and Mrs. Rasamond Ray of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Terry of Pescadero, Calif. and Raymond of Oakdale, Calif., three brothers, Lloyd, Orville and Ralph Reiner of Iowa, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.  Mrs. Barnhizer’s husband Chester, two sons, Paul and Ted and a daughter, Grace, all preceded her in death.
