John Frederick Krohn

One of the founders of Coursegold

First Generation

1. Mr. Krohn back in Hamburg.

He had the following children:

+          2 M        i.  John Frederick Krohn  was born on 4 Mar 1835 in Hamburg, Germany. He died on 8 Dec 1894 in Coarsegold, California.

+          3 M        ii.  Gustav Carl Albert Krohn  was born in 1844 in Hamburg, Germany. He died on 18 Sep 1888 in San Francisco, California.

Second Generation

2. John Frederick Krohn  was born on 4 Mar 1835 in Hamburg, Germany. He died on 8 Dec 1894 in Coarsegold, Madera Co., CA.

John Krohn, as a boy in Hamburg, Germany, had long wanted to sail to America. This opportunity came when an uncle offered John some work and responsibility with his shipping firm. At that time the firm was engaged in taking cargo to San Francisco via "The Horn". John eagerly accepted the offer. After his third trip to San Francisco, he decided he wanted to settle there. John and a group of his relatives opened a grocery store on Gough Street.

San Francisco Examiner, November 26, 1870:

A serious, if not fatal, cutting affray occurred late yesterday afternoon in a grocery kept by one John Krohn, corner of Gough and Grove streets. Two men named William Kennedy and Thomas Allen entered the store and called for drinks at the bar. Krohn having declined to “shake the dice" with them, they refused to pay for their drinks, and Krohn ordered them to leave the store. They refused to go, and Gustave Krohn going to his brother's assistance, a fierce struggle ensued, in which Gustave received a gash across his abdomen, several inches long and quite deep. Kennedy and Allen then left, but were afterwards arrested by Officer Snyder and Mr. Pomeroy and taken to the city prison. The condition of the wounded man is represented to be critical. [Gustav survived. The assailants received 15 years in prison.]

In San Francisco, John Krohn was constantly hearing stories of gold being found in the foothills of California. He made several trips to the area near Coarsegold Gulch. He became acquainted with a John

Michaels, who had already acquired property in that region. This friendship resulted in an important decision for John Krohn. He sold his share of interest in the grocery store and bought property adjoining Mr. Michaels' at Coarsegold Gulch. The two of them planned to build a community on Coarsegold Creek large enough to support a store, hotel, post office and school. The town was to be known as Coarsegold.By this time, John and Louisa's family consisted of five boys and one girl, Mary.

In 1873, he moved his family and belongings to Coarsegold and established a ranch house near the former Rodeo Grounds. In later years it was always referred to as the "Old Place". John and Mr. Michaels felt that together they could make a living providing goods and services to the miners, prospectors and travelers who were now frequenting that area. Stages were passing through, people were homesteading, and men were working  the streams and soil for "pay dirt", A store was built, a rooming house erected, a saloon opened, and a blacksmith shop was soon in operation. Then a school was organized. The Post Office followed.

San Francisco Examiner, Aug 24, 1867:

Married. In this city, Aug. 21, by Rev. F. Hansen, John Krohn to Mrs. Louisa Moeller.

Naturalized on June 23, 1870 in San Francisco, California. He was then a retail grocer there with wife Louisa and children Mary, Henry, and Louie.

The Expositor, Aug. 14, 1878:

A Post-office has been established at Coarse Gold Gulch, Fresno county, and John Krohn has been appointed Postmaster.

In 1880 John farmed in Fresno County with wife Louisie, 9 children, and cook Ah Yee (20 China).

Obituary – Fresno Weekly Republican, December 14, 1894:

DEATH OF A PIONEER.

One of Madera County's Most Respected Citizens Passes Away. From the Madera Tribune. L. W. Krohn came down from Coarse Gold at noon today and brought the sad intelligence of the death of

his father, John F. Krohn of that place, who died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. Krohn had not been well for some two years, but was not considered to be in years, any immediate danger until within the past few days. He was a native of Germany; came to this country many years ago and to this state in early days, and had resided in the vicinity of Coarse Gold for twenty-one years, where he leaves a large circle friends and neighbor: to mourn his departure. His family consists of his aged wife and eleven children. The cause of his death was a complication of diseases. John Krohn, 88 he was familiarly called, was an honest, upright citizen, who had a large circle of friends and acquaintances all over the state. His word was as good as gold. He was past 55 years of age.

Official Fresno County Death Record is died on 9 Dec 1894, a hotelkeeper died of alcoholism.

John married Louisa "Oma" Reese  on 20 Aug 1867 in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA. Louisa was born in Apr 1843 in Hanover, Germany. She died on 16 Nov 1925 in Coarsegold, Madera Co., CA.

Louisa was a shy person, she remained to herself most of the long journey "around the Horn". However, the day that she heard voices excitingly speak of the appearance of the "Golden Gate", she put on her hat and rushed to the outer deck. Immediately a gust of wind caught her hat, carrying it off in the breeze lost forever! From then on she vowed never again to own a hat. This vow she broke years later; but from then on she covered her head and hat with a long scarf. Upon arrival in San Francisco she was introduced to family friends who were in wholesale businesses. Shortly thereafter, she fell madly in love with a George Mueller. They were married; but before her first child, named Mary, was born, Louisa was widowed and lonely. Although Louisa's first marriage ended in sadness, it was a marriage involving a deep love. She was instinctively a good housewife and not afraid of hard work. She possessed a keen mind, great determination, and was now lonely. She longed for a good husband, a family and a chance to be a homemaker. John Krohn gave her this opportunity when he expressed his wish for a home and family of his own. The two were married. Thus, Louisa's second marriage was to mean the fulfillment of a dream to be a good homemaker. John Krohn gave Louisa's daughter Mary the love of a real father and she was usually referred to as Mary Krohn rather than Mary Mueller.

In 1900 Louise farmed in Madera County with 5 children.
