Madera Biographies: ATWOOD

 

ALTON CURTIS ATWOOD , M. D.

Dr. A. C. Atwood is city health officer of Chowchilla, Madera County, and since September 1932, he has operated the Chowchilla hospital, which he established, and which includes an ambulance service.

Alton Curtis Atwood was born at St. Helena, Napa County, April 17, 1897, the son of Samuel Curtis and Violet Elizabeth (Blackford) Atwood. The Atwood family was originally from Scotland; two brothers named ‘‘Attwoode" came to America in the early days, one settling in Massachusetts, the other in Maine. Dr. Atwood’s father came to California in 1895, establishing himself in St. Helena, Napa County.

Dr. Atwood received his education at the Pacific Union College, Angwin, California, from which he received his B. S. degree in 1921. In 1925 he received his M. D. degree from the College of Medical Evangelists.

Dr. Atwood’s first acquaintance with Madera County began in 1914, when as a youth he worked in the hay fields of the Chowchilla dairy district.

After completing his professional course, he was with the Los Angeles General Hospital, the San Joaquin General Hospital and the Plumas Industrial Hospital from 1925 to 1928, and in private practice at Soquel, Santa Cruz County, from1928 to 1982. In 1932 he returned to Chowchilla where he is now in active practice, and is local physician for the Southern Pacific Company.

During the Great War, Dr. Atwood served in the Medical corps and was stationed at Camp Kearny. He is past finance officer of the Guincy Post 405, American Legion. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Chowchilla Lodge No. 454; of the Lions club; and of the American Medical Association and the state and county organizations of his profession.
