LUCERNE SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one ???)

The area that has become Lucerne was once the large ranch of Samuel Morrison. Several schools had been held around the area, starting in the 1860s; some private, some actual school districts, situated from the present Lucerne area to the present Nice area. These included the private Morrison school, and Lakeshore School, Bartlett Landing School and Miner's Cabin School (which were during the time the Lakeshore School District was in force), and Hammond School.
In 1923 nearly all of the Morrison ranch was sold to the Clear Lake Beach Company, who began to subdivide it. An area was layed out to form the present Lucerne School District. A new school building was started, but there was a problem with setting the boundaries of the new district. In 1929, not wanting to wait for the final boudaries to be settled, Milt Elliott hired Miss Adah Stipp to teach, and she was paid by Mr. Elliott and the Clear Lake Beach Company. The classes were held in a house, since the new school was not completed.
In 1930 school was started in the new building, although the school district boundaries still had not been determined. When the boundaries were finally settled, the children from Nice were declared to be in the Upper Lake Grammar School District.
