LOCONOMI SCHOOL


Sometimes spelled Loconoma, the school district was organized before 1869. The school was about 4 miles northeast of Middletown, in Coyote Valley. It was an Indian name meaning "Wild Goose Place". It is not certain when the Loconomi School started because all records were lost when the Lake County Courthouse burned February 15, 1867. It was in operation before that because the Board of Supervisors voted on March 14, 1867 to reestablish the school district. In 1869 there were 76 pupils, but in 1881 there were only 55. The Middletown School District was formed from part of the Loconoma School District in 1871, which took away some of the students.

In 1910 the original schoolhouse was replace with a new on on the banks of Putah Creek. For lack of students the school closed in 1937 and the school district consolidated with the Middletown School District.

In 1940 the building was sold and moved to Butts Canyon Road in Long Valley where it was used to store articles including dynamite. In April 1954 the building burned with a loud bang and totally destroyed. Later, a man who was thought to have had a disagreement over wages with the person who then owned the property, admitted he had set fire to the building.
