sometimes hard to read)
There are mixed reports about the first schools and teachers in Lakeport, and sometimes it is hard to tell if the memories are about the Lakeport Grammar School or some kind of a private school. One report says that the first teacher was named A. P. McCarty. Another says the first school in Lakeport was taught by Nehemiah Smith.

This was in the Clear Lake Courier, February 28, 1867:
"Alice A. Allen & Sarah L. McClish received teaching certificates. Lakeport District school opened with Alice A. Allen & Sarah L. McClish as teachers."

The school district was established in 1867. The old two-story, two-room building stood at the northeast corner of Third and High Streets, two blocks west of the present Courthouse. At a later time, a new, Square building was constructed for the Grammar School students. Then, a new stucco building on Main Street was finished and put into use in the spring of 1923. The present Grammar School is located in what is known as the Terraces, at the north end of Lakeport, next to the High School.
