Colusa County Cities, Towns, Communities and Defunct Settlements

This list includes some settlements that were a part of Colusa County, but were transferred to another county at a later date. Only those settlements, later transferred to another county, where U.S. Post Offices were established are listed here.

A

Arbee - An unincorporated community located approximately 1 mile southeast of Colusa.

Arbuckle - An unincorporated town northwest of College City named for Tacitus R. Arbuckle, landowner in that area, in 1875. U.S. Post Office established 1876. Postmaster in 1881: T. R. Arbuckle.

 

B

Bear Valley - May refer to any number of residences, ranches and establishments in Bear Valley.

Belvidere - A defunct settlement, located approximately 12 miles southeast of Willows, that was transferred to Glenn County in 1891. U.S. Post Office established 1879 and closed 1879.

Berlin - see Genevra.

Bonnie View - An unincorporated community west of Stonyford.

Boyers Landing (also Boyer's Landing) - An unincorporated community on the Sacramento River southeast of College City.

 

C

Canaan - A defunct settlement located approximately 18 miles northwest of Colusa. U.S. Post Office established 1871 and closed 1872.

Central - see Williams.

Coast Range - A defunct settlement probably located somewhere near the present-day Glenn County community of Chrome. U.S. Post Office established 1868 and closed 1876.

College City - An unincorporated town southeast of Arbuckle, established in 1876 when Pierce Christian College located on land willed to the college by Andrew Pierce. The college left the area in 1896 and there has not been a college in College City since that year. U.S. Post Office established 1873 and closed 2002. Postmaster in 1881: Simeon Davis.

Colusa (also Colusi and Colusi's) - An incorporated city and county seat of Colusa County. Named by Charles D. Semple and Will S. Green for the Colusi Indian Tribe in 1850. U.S. Post Office established (at Colusi) 1851. Postmaster in 1881: J. H. Jones.

Colusa Junction - see Cortena.

Colusa Rancheria - An unincorporated community north of Colusa. Its inhabitants belong to the Wintun tribe.

Cook Springs (also Cook's Springs) - A defunct settlement located approximately 32 miles southwest of Williams. Was once a mineral springs health resort. U.S. Post office established 1879 and closed 1880.

Cortena - An unincorporated community originally named Colusa Junction because of its location at the junction of Southern Pacific Railroad and Colusa & Lake Railroad, south of Maxwell. U.S. Post Office established (at Colusa Junction) 1886 and closed 1914.

Cortina - A defunct settlement located approximately 16 miles west of Arbuckle. U.S. Post Office established 1898 and closed 1901.

Cortina Indian Rancheria - An unincorporated community west of Arbuckle. Inhabitants belong to the Wintun tribe.

D

Delevan (also Delavan and Del Evan) - An unincorporated community located approximately 3.5 miles south of Norman (Glenn County) and 5 miles north of Maxwell. U.S. Post Office established 1902, closed in 1917, re-opened in 1922, re-designated as a rural station in 1959 and closed in 1984.

Delphos - An unincorporated community developed along the Southern Pacific Railroad north of Williams.

Devils Elbow - An unincorporated community northeast of Lodoga.

 

E

Epperson - A defunct settlement (ranch) located in Bear Valley and named for Brutus Clay Epperson, ranch owner. U.S. Post Office established 1878 and closed 1899. Postmaster in 1881: B. C. Epperson.

 

F

Fouts Springs - An unincorporated community southwest of Stonyford, best known for being the headquarters of the New Tribes Mission. The community was named for John F. Fouts, who discovered the springs in the area in 1873. In the early portion of the 20th century, Fouts Springs supported a resort capable of hosting 150 guests. U.S. Post Office established 1881, closed 1913, re-opened 1945, closed 1947, re-opened 1950 and closed 1956.

Fraziers Landing - An unincorporated community east of College City.

Freshwater - A defunct settlement located approximately 5 miles northwest of Williams. U.S. Post Office established 1874 and closed 1877.

G

Genevra (also Genevra Station and Berlin) - An unincorporated community originally named Berlin in the 1870s by officials of the Southern Pacific Railroad on whose tracks the community was established, northwest of Arbuckle. The community was renamed during World War II. U.S. Post Office established (at Berlin) 1876 and closed 1934. Postmaster in 1881: T. A. Wahlfrom.

Gilmore - A defunct settlement (ranch) located in Bear Valley and named for Giles H. Gilmore, ranch owner. U.S. Post Office established 1881 and closed 1892. Postmaster in 1881: Giles H. Gilmore.

Graino - An unincorporated community northeast of College City.

Grand Island - An unincorporated community on the Sacramento River, so-named in the early-1850s to designate the land lying between Sycamore Slough and the Sacramento River. U.S. Post Office established 1854 and closed 1919. Postmaster in 1881: C. J. Diefendorff.

Grimes - An unincorporated community (village) on Grand Island, founded and named by Cleaton Grimes in 1855. U.S. Post Office established 1883.

 

H

Harrington - An unincorporated community south of College City.

Hershey - An unincorporated community located along the Southern Pacific Railroad and shared by Colusa and Yolo counties. Named for Yolo County's first assemblyman, David N. Hershey.

Hopewell - A defunct settlement located approximately 15 miles south of Colusa. U.S. Post Office established 1864 and closed 1865.

 

I

Indian Valley - May refer to any number of residences, ranches and establishments in Indian Valley and the Indian Valley Reservoir area.

 

K

Kanawha - A defunct settlement, located approximately 4 miles west of Willows, that was transferred to Glenn County in 1891. U.S. Post Office established 1871 and closed 1879.

Kent - A defunct settlement located approximately 3 miles west of West Butte. U.S. Post Office established 1891 and closed 1911.

Ket-tee - see Princeton.

Koru - see Colusa.

L

Leesville - An unincorporated community named in 1873 for Leander "Lee" Washington Harl, a Mexican-American War veteran who also was Justice of the Peace, 1869-1871, for the Leesville area. U.S. Post Office established 1874 and closed 1920. Postmaster in 1881: W. M. Tucker.

Little Stony - A defunct settlement of unknown location, probably somewhere along Little Stony Creek. U.S. Post Office established 1879 and closed 1891. Postmaster in 1881: D. E. Goulding.

Loch-loch - see Sycamore.

Lodoga (also Ladoga) - An unincorporated town named circa 1898 by unknown individuals. Origin of name unknown. U.S. Post Office established 1898, closed in 1913, re-opened in 1913, closed in 1917, re-opened in 1924 and closed in 1954.

Lurline - A defunct settlement located southwest of Maxwell.

 

M

Maxwell - An unincorporated town and farming community originally named Occident and re-named for George Maxwell in 1878, after Maxwell donated land in the area for a railroad line. U.S. Post Office established 1877. Postmaster in 1881: J. D. Bacon.

Millers Landing (also Miller's Landing) - An unincorporated community on the Sacramento River, southeast of College City.

Mills Orchards - An unincorporated community west of Maxwell.

Monroeville (also, Munroeville) - A defunct settlement, once the county seat of Colusa County (1851-1853), transferred to Glenn County in 1891. The settlement was located approximately 15 miles north of Butte City, near the mouth of Stony Creek in northeastern Glenn County. U.S. Post Office established 1851 and closed 1862.

Moulton - A defunct settlement of unknown location, perhaps somewhere near the Moulton Weir (dam). U.S. Post Office established 1887 and closed 1888.

 

O

Oak Flat - A defunct settlement located approximately 4.5 miles north-northwest of Grimes along the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Occident - see Maxwell.

Olimpo - A defunct settlement that was transferred to Glenn County in 1891. The settlement was located approximately 6 miles northwest of Orland. U.S. Post Office established 1872 and closed 1883. Postmaster in 1881: T. C. Graves.

P

Princeton - An unincorporated town, originally named Ket-tee, named in 1855 by Dr. Andrew Lull for his alma mater. U.S. Post Office established 1855. Postmaster in 1881: David Bentley.

Prize - A defunct settlement located northeast of Arbuckle. U.S. Post Office established 1900 and closed 1919.

 

S

St. John - A defunct settlement named from A. C. St. John, one of Colusa County's earliest settlers. Location unknown, near the mouth of some river or creek.

Salmon Bend - see Colusa.

Sites - An unincorporated community located northwest of Maxwell. Named in 1887 for John H. Sites, an area landholder, by Carl E. Grunsky. U.S. Post Office established 1887 and closed 1968.

Smithville - see Stonyford.

Spring Valley- A defunct settlement located approximately 22 miles southwest of Colusa. U.S. Post Office established 1869 and closed 1875.

Stegeman (also Stegemann) - An unincorporated community east of Delevan.

Stonyford (also Stony Ford) - An unincorporated town, originally named Smithville. Used to be situated on Stony Creek, about where the Stonyford School stands today. Smithville was so-named by John L. Smith, its founder and local landowner. Smithville was "bodily moved" to its present location, building by building, and renamed Stonyford in 1890 by H. C. Stilwell. U.S. Post Office established 1891.

Sulphur Creek - A defunct settlement of unknown location, probably along Sulpher Creek. U.S. Post Office established 1874 and closed 1915. Postmaster in 1881: Lottie Blanch.

Sycamore - An unincorporated community, originally named Loch-loch, near the mouth of Sycamore Slough. U.S. Post Office established 1871 and closed 1960. Postmaster in 1881: Howell Davis.

T

Tuttle - A defunct settlement located approximately 4 miles southeast of Colusa on the Sacramento Northern Railroad.

 

V

Venado - A defunct settlement - located about 10 miles West of Willliams on the Leesville Road. U.S. Post Office established 1874 and closed 1914. Postmaster in 1881: J. C. Statler.

 

W

Waikosel - (also Wai-ko-sel and Wicosels) is a former Native American settlement. Location unknown.

West Butte - (also Westbutte) An unincorporated community located approximately 3.25 miles north-northeast of Meridian (Sutter County).

Wilbur Springs - An unincorporated community southwest of Williams. U.S. Post Office established 1909 and closed 1945.

Williams - An incorporated city originally named Central. Renamed in 1876 for W. H. Williams, who platted the town site. U.S. Post Office established (at Central) 1874. Postmaster in 1881: P. B. Chamberlain.

 

Z

Zachary - A defunct settlement of unknown location. U.S. Post Office established 1900 and closed 1906.
