He also enjoyed Bible study and Christian development. He was born in San Jose to Robert and Eleanor Romero. Mr. Romero worked at Blue Shield as a clerk for four years. He is survived by his wife, Melanie Romero of Chico; son, Brandon Romero of Chico; parents, Robert and Eleanor Romero of Paradise; sisters, Mary Sanchez of Paradise, Debbie Diego of Paradise, Lorraine Marino of Paradise, and brother, Robert Romero Jr. of Paradise. William Ballestad Aug. 27, 1960 - Jan. 3, 2002 William Eugene Ballestad, 41, was born in Great Falls, Mo. He grew up in Reno, Nev., and came to Butte County 10 years ago. Mr. Ballestad had been a quadriplegic since 1977. He liked to watch science fiction on TV and travel around in his wheelchair. His father, Nels L. Ballestad, precedes Mr. Ballestad in death. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis E. Ballestad of Sacramento; brothers, Neal Ballestad of Paradise, Bryan Ballestad of Reno, Nev., and Perry Hedrick of Sacramento, and his niece, Shawnie Ballestad of Reno, Nev. He was an inspector at a Naval Air Station for 27 years, and was a member of the Masons of California. He was born in Sunnyvale to Pearl and Donald MacNair. His wife of 32 years, Dorothy MacNair of Magalia; sons, Daniel MacNair of Florida and Donald MacNair of Texas, and his daughter, Wendy Kittredge of New Mexico, survive Mr. MacNair. Edith Aust 1933 - Jan. 6, 2002 Edith Madeline Aust, 68, was born in Turlock, Calif., in 1933 to Kenneth and Elizabeth Curran. In 1951, Mrs. Aust graduated from Chico High School. She marriage Mr. Fred Aust in 1952. Mrs. Aust worked with her husband at “Smitty’s Radio and Television” through the late 1950s and ’60s. Later in life, she was employed at Chico Senior High School Library, secretary at Faith Lutheran Church and until her retirement, a librarian at Butte College. Mrs. Aust loved to travel, particularly to Costa Rica, where she developed strong friendships. She was also a loving mother and grandmother. Her sons, David Aust of Chico, Edward Aust of Oakland, Donald Aust of Redding and Timothy Aust of Rohnert Park; three brothers, one sister and eight grandchildren survive her. Pedersen, 62, was the owner of the We-Lark Lounge in Paradise for over 28 years. He was born in Salt Lake City to Lars and Magda Pedersen. He moved to San Francisco in 1960 and to Paradise in 1973. Mr. Pedersen, and his wife, Pat, bought the We-Lark Lounge on Skyway, where he was the owner and operator for the past 28 years. Mr. Pedersen was a member of the Moose and Elks lodges, and E. Clampus Vitas. Mr. Pedersen is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia of Paradise; daughter, Robin Michel of Fremont; son, Erik Pedersen of Chico; brother, Alfred Pedersen of Salt Lake City; sisters, Liv Web of Salt Lake City, Maia Amos of Citrus Heights, Judy Jones of Salt Lake City, Ruth Salmon of West Bountiful, Utah; three grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. James Skotvold Dec. 4, 1920 - Jan. 3, 2002 James Arling Skotvold, 81, worked for Southern Pacific Railroad as a crew dispatcher for 26 years. He was born in Centerville, S.D., to Olaf and Lillie Skotvold. Mr. Skotvold served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945. He enjoyed playing pool, boccie ball and bridge. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanette Skotvold; daughter, Cathy Cavagnaro of Oakland; sons, Jeff Skotvold of Paradise Pines and John Skotvold of Martinez; sister, Dorothy Sauber of Huntington Beach; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ernst, 76, served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was born in Chicago to William B. and Ruth L. Ernst. He received his degree in mechanical engineering from University of California, Berkeley, in the early 1950s, and was a mechanical engineer with Dow Chemical in Pittsburg for over 27 years. He retired in 1989, and moved to Paradise in 1990. Mr. Ernst marriage Lyda F. Mitchell in San Francisco in 1949. He was a member of the Christian Missionary Alli-ance Church in Paradise, the Mayflower Society, and a volunteer with the Feather River Auxiliary. Mr. Ernst enjoyed traveling, woodcarving and music. He played the clarinet and the piano and sang in choirs. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lyda Ernst of Middletown; daughter, Pamela Stanley of Middle-town; son, Kerry Ernst of LaPine, Ore., and two grandchildren. Clarence O’Reilly Sept. 26, 1901 - Jan. 6, 2002 Clarence William O’Reilly, 100, owned and operated his own glass company as a glazer. He was born in Utah, to Frank and Olga O’Reilly. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Paradise Elks Lodge, and the Paradise Rod and Gun Club. Mr. O’Reilly enjoyed guns and fishing. His wife, Mary O’Reilly preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Wallace E.O. O’Reilly of Cypress; daughter, Gladys M. Flynn of Paradise; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Jay Hilgers March 19, 1918 - Jan. 7, 2002 Jay Hilgers, 83, was born in Plainville, Kansas to Jay and Bessie Hilgers. Mr. Hilgers loved to travel and had traveled to many countries as well as most of the United States. His work was with the Atomic Energy Commission. He worked as a cryogenic engineer. He was a participant in the nuclear deterrent programs that were developed by the U.S. Government in the early 1950s. Mr. Hilgers was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He traveled the world in his later years, and greatly loved his forays to exotic destinations. Mr. Hilgers and his long-time companion, Hazel Chew, had recently moved to Paradise from Escondido. He is survived by his sons, Dr. James Hilgers of Rancho Santa Fe and Jon Hilgers of Orinda; daughters, Laura Hilgers of Laguna Niguel and Toni Hilgers of San Diego; six grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers; Ms. Chew’s daughter, Anita Harris and her children of Paradise. Bernice Turner Aug. 23, 1914 - Jan. 4, 2002 Bernice Turner, 87, was a member of Sporthaven Health Club for 10 years where she attended aqua aerobics. Sylvia Schultz April 24, 1910 - Jan. 7, 2002 Sylvia R. Schultz, 91, was an employee for the Chrysler Corporation for over 30 years. She was born in Ada, Okla., to Sam and Parlee Maxville. Mrs. Schultz was a member of Eastern Star in Downey, the Paradise Ridge Runners, the Paradise Nuggets and the Good Sam Club. She was a practical joker, and enjoyed attending family reunions, crocheting everything from afghans and tablecloths to throw rugs. She loved crafts and enjoyed traveling in her RV. Rena Girten Nov. 4, 1923 - Jan. 6, 2002 Rena Mae Appleford Girten, 78, and her husband, Bob Girten, owned and raised apples in their orchard in Paradise until 1991 when they moved to Texas. She was born in New Braunfels, Texas. She was known as GiGi by her grandchildren and had many years of travel throughout much of the country as a military wife when her husband was serving in the Navy. She is survived by her husband, Bob Girten of New Braunfels, Texas; daughter, Gale O’Hara-Pospisil, New Braunfels; sons, Richard O’Hara of Portland, Charles O’Hara of Vancoyverm, Wash., Pat O’Hara and Mike O’Hara of Paradise, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Howard Porter Sr. June 23, 1932 - Jan. 1, 2002 Howard Chandler Porter Sr. was born in San Raphael, N.M., to Joel Hamilton Porter and Georgia Ellen Haralsen. He passed away the morning of Jan. 1, 2002 in Coos Bay, Ore. Two brothers; one sister; 13 children, 41 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive him. John Steed Dec. 10, 1910 - Jan. 6, 2002 John Doyle Steed was a resident of Paradise for 33 years, as was known to his friends as “Doyle.” He was born in Olathe, Kansas, to John S. and Delia Steed. Mr. Steed attended elementary school in Olathe and Kansas City Junior College, Santa Monica Junior College and the University of California, Los Angeles, after moving to California Following his appointment to the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1940, he served for 28 years, achieving the rank of captain before his retirement in 1968. Mr. Steed was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. He always stood ready to help anyone in need. He became a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in 1968, and was a major contributor in the benevolence of his lodge. He served eight years as a member of Paradise Lodge No. 2026 Board of Trustees. In 1971, he was named Elk of the Year. In 1996, he joined SIRS Chapter 52 in Paradise. He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Mae Rhoades Steed of Olathe, Kansas, who died in 1995. He is survived by his present wife, Matilde Schumaker Steed whom he marriage in 1996; son, Joseph Doyle Steed of Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, Nev.; grandsons, Michael Steed of Colorado Springs, Colo., and David Steed of Gridley. Betty Colvard-Smith April 23, 1930 - Jan. 9, 2002 Betty Colvard-Smith, 71, marriage Seymour Smith in 1971 in a most unusual place: a walnut huller in Vina. She was born in El Reno, Okla., to Grover and Cally Coates. Mrs. Colvard-Smith worked at various bars and restaurants in and around Butte county and also worked for Fleetwood and Kentwood Mobile Home factories. She also worked at the walnut huller in Vina where she was married. Mrs. Colvard-Smith was on the P.T.A. of Oakdale schools in the 1950s, and was known as the matriarch of the family. She is survived by her husband, Seymour of Paradise; children, Claudia McCoshum of Magalia, Linda Thompson of Paradise, Roxann Phillips of Paradise, Torry Colvard of Paradise, Teddy Joe Colvard of Paradise and Danny Benjamin Colvard of Sutter County; stepson, Aron Smith of Hoopa, 29 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Edward Taylor Feb. 14, 1914 - Jan. 8, 2002 Edward John Taylor, 87, was a member of Native Sons of Calistoga No. 63, Pomona Grange, Master of DeSabla Grange No. 0762, American Legion Post No. 0231 for 56 years, and DeSabla Grange for 18 years. He was born in France to Emile Bourdieu and Marie Rose Micq-Jouande. Mr. Taylor served in the Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1945. He was a police officer for the city of Calistoga. When he retired, he moved to the Ridge after 32 years of law enforcement. He enjoyed fishing DeSabla Reservoir. Mr. Taylor is survived by his sister, Georgia Grimsley of Calistoga, and a special thanks to his niece, Marie A. Cook, who stood close by him during the last years of his life. He attended school in San Leandro and served in the United States Marines from 1944 to 1945. He marriage Thelma Belliner in Nevada in 1938. She preceded him in death in 1986. Mr. Ortega was a life member and charter member of Local No. 70 of the Teamsters Union in Oakland and a life member of the Elks Lodge in Paradise. He loved to garden and was an avid and faithful 49er fan. Mr. Ortega also loved to dance. He is survived by his sons: Dennis Ortega of Paradise and Richard Ortega of Denver; daughter, Rae Krieger of Fremont; sisters, Mary Boehrer of Freemon and Flint Belliner of Oroville; granddaughter, Kitti Eller and several grandchildren who live out of the area. Melvin Nesmith Oct. 15, 1921 - Jan. 7, 2002 Melvin E. Nesmith, 80, enjoyed traveling, bowling and gardening. He was born in Dublin, Ga., and served in the United States Navy from 1941 through 1961 during World War II. Mr. Nesmith retired from Kaiser Aero Space after 20 years. She became a registered nurse and marriage in her early 20s. Mrs. McPherson earned an M.S. in Health Care Administration. Later in life she lived in Sylmar and then retired to Magalia. She was an adventurous world traveler and avid stitcher. She is preceded in death by her sons, Danny and Larry Kinman; and sister Carol Roberts. Lawrence Jobe Sept. 27, 1919 - Jan. 12, 2002 Lawrence “Larry” Jobe, 83, was born in Corning to Maurice and Agnes Jobe. A long-time resident of Paradise, he was raised west of Orland, graduating from the eighth grade at Floyd School in a class of two, and then later from Orland High School. During World War II he served as a civilian equipment operator in the Aleutian Islands. Early in his life, he was in the logging business and then later went into the business of leasing water trucks for construction work. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge in Covelo, later transferring to the Paradise Lodge. He was known locally in Paradise as the owner of a 1914 American LaFrance fire engine that appeared annually in the Gold Nugget Paradise. He also was involved most of his life in aviation; flying both for business and pleasure. He is survived by brothers, John A. Jobe of Orland and Roger D. Jobe of Willows; sisters, Merice J. Jess of Maryville and Joyce C. Hills of Orland. Hazel Foster Jobe, his wife of 54 years, preceded him in death in 1995. Leroy Miller Jr. March 12, 1923 - Jan. 11, 2002 Leroy Phillip Miller Jr., 78, moved to Magalia 20 years ago from San Jose. He was employed at General Motors in maintenance for 28 years. He was born in Louisville, Ky., to Phillip and Katherine Miller. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Alice Virginia Miller, whom he marriage 37 years ago in Reno, Nev.; sisters, Dorothy Herrera of Paradise and Barbara Jean Eilmas of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, and brother, Milton Miller of Modesto. Perkins, 85, retired as a self-employed salesman for 45 years in the bakery industry. Before he was self-employed, he worked for Omar, Service and Helms Bakeries in Southern California. He was born in Boswell, Ind., to John and Nettie Perkins. Mr. Perkins moved to Paradise in 1981 from Glendale. He enjoyed golfing and fishing, and was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by Lois Perkins of Paradise, his wife of 67 years; sons, Larry of Neenah, Wis., Dale of Burbank and Steven of Arlington, W. Virg.; daughters, Donna Dees of Paradise and Sue Lind of Chino Hills, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Edna Wheeler Sept. 24, 1921 - Jan. 10, 2002 Edna Pearl Wheeler Jones, 80, worked in the electronics field for 30 years and retired at the age of 71 from Data Devices, Inc., in Chatsworth. She retired to Paradise in 1992. She was born in Martha, Okla., to Arthur and Pearl Brooks Sheeler. Mrs. Wheeler met her true love and life companion, Melvin “Bud” Poole and they spent the last 16 years together. She, Mr. Poole, and their dog, Panda, enjoyed traveling in their motorhome with the Sierra Ramblers Travel Club. Mrs. Jones loved visiting family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her companion, Bud Poole, daughter, June Fusfield of American Falls, Idaho; son, Jack Jones of Fairbanks, Alaska; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Albert Machuta March 24, 1921 - Jan. 13, 2002 Albert Jacob Machuta, 80, was born in Cleveland to Jacob and Mary Machuta. Mr. Machuta earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1942. He marriage Lorraine Doyle in New Jersey in 1943. Mr. Machuta joined the Army Air Forces in 1943 and was a lieutenant in the Signal Corps division until 1946. He then was in civil service on the East Coast from 1947 until 1956, working on early radar systems. From 1956 to 1972, General Electric Corporation employed him in the space systems division where he worked on the first weather satellite. He was a real estate investor in California and Colorado from 1972 through 2002. Mr. Machuta lived in Santa Cruz for five years before moving to Paradise two months ago. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid reader. His wife, Lorraine of Paradise, and his son, Robert of Magalia, survive Mr. Machuta. A family service will be held at a later date. Herbert Summers Dec. 13, 1910 - Jan. 12, 2002 Herbert Otto Summer, 91, came to Northern California with his family in 1926. They settled in the Durham Land Colony on Lott Road. He raised beans with his father, and worked for several ranchers in the area. He was born in Irvine, to Otto and Emily (Frazier) Summers. Mr. Summers met Marie Bickford and they were marriage in 1930. They settled on Lott Road also. She passed away in 1982 after 51 years of marriage. He worked for Richter Gold Dredging in Downieville; however, returned to Durham for the rice harvest at the E.L. Adams Ranch, and worked there for 26 years, retiring as head troubleshooter. Mr. Summers later worked as a security guard for Diamond International in Chico, retiring as head guard. During the 1960s, he was active in Boy Scouts. During his work with the boys in Troop 71 of Chico, he achieved the rank of Life Scout at the age of 50. He then marriage Lelya Wyghandt and moved to Chico. She preceded him in death three years ago. Mr. Summers was a member of the Rosicrucian Order of San Jose and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2960 of Paradise for 15 years. He is survived by his sons, Stanford of Chico, Jack of Auburn, James of Elgin, Ore., and daughter, Elizabeth Davidson of Magalia; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, ten nieces and nephews and extended Donner family members. Michael Purpus Sept. 15, 1930 - Jan. 11, 2002 Michael Edward Purpus, 71, was a retired, senior methods analyst for 20 years at Sunkist Growers. He was born in Cleveland to Darrell and Libby Purpus. Mr. Purpus graduated in 1948 from Bowling Green University with a business degree. He grew up in Kansas City, Mo., and moved to Magalia from Mira Loma in 1996. He enjoyed golfing, loved gardening and working in his yard. Mr. Purpus was a member of Paradise Pines Golf Club, the United States Golf Associa-tion and SIRS No. 182. He is survived by his long-time companion, Fleta M. Scammahorn of Magalia; sons, Michael G. Purpus of Bowling Green, Ky., and Dennis W. McAninch of Green River Wyo.; daughter, Michelle Jackson of Independence, Mo.; sister, Patricia West of Las Vegas, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bass March 27, 1942 - Jan. 11, 2002 Stephen J. Bass, 59, was employed by McDonnell Douglas prior to his retirement. He was an electrical/ mechanical engineer. Mr. Bass was born in Seattle and marriage Dale M. Bergeron May 29, 2001 in Oroville. He loved wood carving, reading and sailing. He was also involved in animal husbandry. He is survived by his wife, Dale M. Bill Donahue June 13, 1938 - Jan. 17, 2002 Bill Edwin Donahue, 63, was an independent truck driver for 25 years. He also was a bus driver and custodian for the Paradise Unified School District. Mr. Donahue was born in Star City, Ark., to Lonnie and Velma Donahue. He grew up in Chico, and attended Chico schools. Mr. Donahue served in the United States Navy and when he returned to Chico, he marriage Shirley Pride who was also from Chico. He loved truck driving and taught many young friends to drive a truck. Mr. Donahue loved hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and sports. He attended the Pentecostal Church of God, and also enjoyed spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Donahue of Paradise; daughters, LeaAnna Seville of Fort Worth, Texas and Rita Ford of Magalia, Loretta Ferguson of Magalia, Trina Tucker of Magalia; sons, Donavon Ferry of Paradise and Michael Mosier of Arizona; sisters, Patricia Miller of Chico and Pearl Derryberry of Chico; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. He retired after 50 years as an auto salesman and manager. Mr. Uradzionek was a resident of Paradise for 15 years. Mr. Uradzionek was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Paradise. His life was centered on his home, his family and his work. He was very outgoing, enjoyed being around and talking to people and also enjoyed fishing. She was a past member of Napa Eastern Star and loved gardening and trips to Reno and Tahoe. Mr. Brown moved to Paradise nine months ago from Fairfield, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing pool, horseshoes and loved to play Canasta. She was a homemaker and enjoyed writing short stories, staying home and taking care of her kitties. Mrs. LeRoy was very involved with her church, but most of all she enjoyed fishing with her children at Lake Francis. She is survived by her sons, Tom Lindolm of Loleta and Oscar Lindholm of Paradise; daughter, Gloria Jeanne Rhodes of Colorado; brother, William McCranie of Arcata; sisters, Jessie Wilson of Grass Valley and Claudia Grant of Canada, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Frank Rines April 23, 1919 - Jan. 15, 2002 Frank Samuel Rines had numerous occupations. He worked as a fireman for the engineer on the Santa Fe Railroad to salesman in automobiles, real estate, and mobile homes. He was born in Calwa to Comfort Knox Tate and Marshall Andrew Rines. Mr. Rines served in the United States Navy in World War II as a fireman first class in the Asiatic Pacific and received the Victory Medal and Expert Pistolman Medal and was honorably discharged in 1946. At the age of 20, he became an ordained minister under the Church of God. His missionary work included opening the Phoenix, Ariz. chapter of Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association International and was the first president, preaching in England, Scotland and Ireland. Pastor Rines traveled throughout the United States as an advance man, making engagements for a full gospel singing youth group during the 1970s. In 1996 he began a new ministry, singing with his wife Margaret, playing his guitar and preaching in local convalescent hospitals and retirement homes. Mr. Rines was predeceased in 1994 by his wife of 38 years, Willie Estalee Akers. Surviving are his present wife, Margaret Gripon Rines of Magalia; son, Marshall Andrew; daughter, Shirley Jane Rines; stepchildren, Larry Richardson of Villa Grande, Ann Renard of Calistoga, Robin Kinkley of Graeagle, Lee Tydeman of Alamo, Patti Thompson and Robert Akers, both of Rapid City, S.D.; brother, Robert Raymond Rines of Bakersfield; sister, Maude Josephine Hoag of Fresno; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and 15 step-great-grandchildren. Richard Howe July 30, 1946 - Jan. 25, 2002 Richard Allen Howe, 55, was a member of Local Union 3, Paradise Disabled Veterans, served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart. He was a heavy equipment operator in construction for seven years. Mr. Howe is survived by his sons; Shaun Howe of Denver, Colo., Calvin Howe of Holden, Colo. and Brad Howe of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Kristin Howe of Salt Lake City, three grandchildren and one brother, Les Howe of Highland, Ind. Phillips, 92, worked for 42 years in Los Angeles County as the county library construction supervisor. He moved to Paradise in 1972 from Southern California. His parents were Calvin and Rosa Phillips Mr. Phillips enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, was great at fixing things and was a good handyman. He was involved with the Paradise Elks Lodge, loved to travel and saw every state except Alaska and Kentucky. His wife, Evelyn N. Phillips, died in 1975. His sisters, Thelma Desmond of Paradise and Ethel Pelphrey of Meadview, Ariz., three grandchildren and one grandson survive Mr. Phillips. She moved to Paradise in 1985 from Concord. Mrs. Jacobson parents were Cloe and Hazel Crabaugh. Mrs. Jacoboson was the manager for Beede’s Variety Store for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Concord. Frances Blengino Jan. 24, 2002 Frances M. Blengino, was born in San Francisco to Joseph and Madaline Radda. She belonged to St. Pius Catholic Church in Redwood City. Mrs. Blengino lived in Redwood City for 40 years before moving to Paradise. She loved being a homemaker, gardening and working in the yard. In 1926, his family moved to California where he was a successful actor and singer in musical comedies. Some of his credits included starring roles in “John Brown’s Body,” “Damn Yankees,” “Happy Fellow,” and “Guys and Dolls.” His television credits included “The Day Lincoln was Shot” and “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.” Mr. McMahon moved with his family to Paradise in 1972 where he worked for the Paradise Postal Service. He had many hobbies, including gardening, woodworking and collecting. Mr. McMahon is survived by his wife, Peg, to whom his was marriage for 42 years; son, Patrick McMahon of Virginia; daughters, Katie Gillen and Wendy Limbaugh of Paradise, and three grandchildren. A gathering will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 11 am. To 2 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Katie, at 14128 Elmira Circle in Magalia for family and close friends. She served in World War I in the United States Army. Mrs. Yoder was born in Missouri and was a fastidious homemaker. She took pride in everything she did around the home. Mrs. Yoder was widowed. Rose Chapel Mortuary handled the arrangements. Lloyd Ferguson Aug. 25, 1921 - Jan. 28, 2002 Lloyd Jefferson “Fergy” Ferguson, 80, moved to Paradise from Texas. Mr. Ferguson marriage Myrtle Thrower Ferguson in Waco, Texas. She preceded him in death last year. He was born in West, Texas to Willie and Annie Faye Ferguson. Prior to moving to Paradise from Texas, Mr. Ferguson owned several car dealerships, a racetrack, salvage yard and roller skating rink. Mr. Ferguson came to California to sell trailers for Oroville Trailer Sales, until he opened Paradise Mobile Home Sales in 1964. He remained at the same location on Skyway until he retired in 1978. He enjoyed golf and fishing. Mr. Ferguson is survived by his son, Michael Ferguson of Paradise; three granddaughters, three great-grandsons, two great-great-granddaughters; two brothers, Ray Ferguson of Dallas and Bill Ferguson of Texas. Mary Rippy Dec. 11, 1923 - Jan. 28, 2002 Mary Rippy, 78, was a Paradise resident from 1936 to 1990, when she relocated to Oroville. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, animals, cats and life. She was born to Anthony and Lilly Kraay. Mrs. Rippy is survived by her husband, John Rippy of Oroville, daughters, Leona Hixson of Alaska and Joyce Buck or Oroville; sister, Allie Evertson of Oregon, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Melvin Freeman Jan. 18, 2002 - Melvin Lorren “Buddy” Freeman of Paradise died at the young age of 51. As a 4-year-old child, Mr. Freeman would go with his family to the local flea markets where he rode the ponies that were brought in for entertainment. He became a buddy with one particular pony named “Nipper.” Later, when Mr. Freeman began penmanship, he would write his name as Buddy-Nipper. The name stuck, and he was now forever known as “Buddy.” Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Snoopy; sons, Mel of Fremont and Josh of Paradise; daughter, Brittney of Portland, Ore.; aunt, Toni; brothers, Ken and Mike “Twig;” sister, Sadie; cousins, Patti and Peggy; nephews, Sunny, K.C. and Brandon “Bud;” nieces, Cambi, Joyce, Lisa, Sheena and Shauna; grandchildren, Brandon and Brawna, along with a multitude of friends whose lives he touched with the gift of love. A celebration of Buddy’s life will take place today at the Church of Christ, 1178 Pearson Road at 4 p.m. Robert Ambrose Sept. 4, 1936 - Jan. 30, 2002 Robert Carl Ambrose, 65, was a laborer at the Stanley Strapping Company for 22 years in Pittsburgh. He was born in Memphis, Tenn., to Jacob and Dorothy Ambrose. In 1954 he enlisted in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1958. In the same year he marriage Rae Harper in Memphis. One of his enjoyments in life was riding motorcycles. His wife, Rae of Magalia; daughter, Ginger Clements of Lance, Mich.; son, Thomas Ambrose of Sheridan, Ore.; sister, June Harris of Meridianville, Ala., and three grandchildren survive him. Duane Purvis Oct. 1, 1917 - Jan. 30, 2002 Duane “Purv” Purvis, 84, enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, and served in the Pacific theater. In 1953, he marriage Jeanette Elvis in San Francisco. Mr. Purvis worked as an engineer for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He and his wife have resided in Magalia since his retirement. He was involved in many organizations, including the Paradise Elks Lodge No. 2026, Paradise Moose Lodge No. 2227, Paradise SIRS No. 135 and the P.O.A. in Magalia. Mr. Purvis enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. His wife, Jeanette of Magalia; daughter, Stacy Jones of Manteca; brother, Leslie Purvis of Minnesota; sister, Virginia Cunningham of Minnesota and two grandchildren survive him. Lola Link Dec. 11, 1917 - Jan. 21, 2002 Lola Pearl Link, 84, was a member of the Church of Christ of Paradise since she moved here, 10 years ago, from Calimasa. She was born in Globe, N.M., to Oliver and Nannie Brazeal. Mrs. Link enjoyed taking care of foster children, china painting, loved traveling and being with her family. She was an avid cook. She is survived by her daughters, Nila Hodges of Paradise and Sherley Nelson of Cathedral City.; sister, Alma E. He was born to August and Augusta Bracht in North Hollywood. Mr. Bracht enjoyed playing golf with his friends and family, and was an avid sports fan of the Lakers and UCLA football teams. He was a quiet, loving, and gentle man of faith. He was a bachelor, and treated his sister’s children as his own. Mr. Bracht is survived by his nephews, Dave F. Heinke and John E. Christian Woods Nov. 4, 1982 - Feb. 2, 2002 Christian Evan Wood, 19, was born to Roderick and Gail Woods in Newport News, Va. He and his parents moved to Magalia from Newport News nine years ago. Mr. Woods graduated from Paradise High School in 2001, and was currently attending Butte College. He had several guitars and enjoyed playing them and writing his own songs. He enjoyed fly-fishing, photography and import cars. He was especially proud of his new Honda Civic. Mr. Woods is survived by his parents, Roderick and Gail Woods of Magalia; maternal grandmother, Lydia Graham of Magalia; paternal grandparents, Shirley and David Sarvary of Magalia, and William Woods and his wife, Karen, of Kellogg, Idaho, many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Alison Graham, who was especially close to Christian. Owanda Van Duzer Sept. 18, 1921 - Jan. 31, 2002 Owanda Bertha Van Duzer, 80, was a member of the Paradise Lutheran Church, past president of the Paradise Lutheran Church Women, and Martha’s Circle. She was born in Canby, Minn., to George and Hildor Larson. She moved to Paradise in 1981 from Tujunga. Mrs. Van Duzer attended Allen High School in Allen, Neb., in 1941. She is survived by her husband, Harold of Paradise, whom she marriage in 1946, and gave her the nickname of “Wandie”; son, Steve Van Duzer of Reno, Nev.; daughter, Marlene A. Biggy of San Jose; sister, Eunice Wade of Greeley, Colo., and five grandchildren. Her sister, Fern Paulson, predeceases Mrs. Van Duzer. Ruth Kimmel April 13, 1923 - Feb. 2, 2002 Ruth Irene Kimmel, 78, met and fell in love with her husband, Everett, while working at the Morton Salt plant in Kansas. They were to celebrate their 60th anniversary this December. She was born in Turon, Kan., to Stanley and Iva Ditto. Mrs. Kimmel was a founding member of New Life Apostolic Church. She was a long-sought after mother figure of younger women and daughters in the church, and was a mother to all who knew her. Her husband, Everett; children, Ferril, Wayne, Kay, Doug, Sheri and 11 grandchildren survive Mrs. Kimmel. Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at New Life Apostolic Church, 8634 Skyway. Richard Smith July 6, 1937 - Feb. 5, 2002 Richard A. “Dick” Smith, 64, was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was in the service for nine years. He was born in Newark Valley, N.Y., and played varsity football in college. Mr. Smith was a flight engineer for Flying Tiger Airlines, and ran their flight simulation program. He was a member of the Butte County Sheriff’s STARS volunteer program and was commander of the organization for two years. He enjoyed pistol shooting, cars, and antiques and loved the ocean. Mr. Smith was active in the Neighborhood Watch program for the Butte County Sheriff’s Department. He will be remembered as a wonderful provider for his family, and a great father who was always a gentleman. His wife, Marion Lou Smith, predeceased him in 1972. His daughter, Cyndi Lou Campbell of Temecula; sister, Bev Hitchcock of New York; grandsons, Travis and Nicholas Campbell, and many friends survive him. She was very dedicated to her children and especially her grandchildren. She was eternally young, and carried a sparkle of youth until her death. William Makinen July 26, 1917 - Feb. 3, 2002 William F. “Bill” Makinen, 84, formerly of Paradise and most recently of Republic, Mich., was born in Negaunee, Mich., to Frank and Mary (Krummi) Makinen. He graduated from Negaunee High School in 1935. In 1938, he marriage Sylvia Uusitalo. They lived in Republic while raising their twin daughters. Mr. Makinen served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1959, he moved to California where he worked as a union carpenter and musician until his retirement in 1982. Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Makinen moved to Paradise, where they lived until 1999. He was an accomplished accordion player, entertaining at festivities in the Upper Peninsula and California. He enjoyed eating a good pasty, history, photography, traveling, camping and fishing. He was also a member of the Republic Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Makinen is survived by his daughter, Sally Hall of Republic; brothers, Edwin and Oiva, both of Negaunee; sisters, Rhea Heins of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Immi Laxo of Republic; 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Makinen was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia, in 1999 and daughter, Sonja Johnson in 1995. Remembrance services were held on Feb. 8 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Republic Cemetery. Delbert Wolfe July 13, 1902 - Feb. 4, 2002 Dilbert Charlton Wolfe, 99, died at Pleasant Care of Riverside. He was born in Gilroy to George Charlton and Stella Lillian Wolfe. Mr. Wolfe attended Gilroy Union High School, where he met Ruth Moore Britzius. They marriage in 1924, at the Gilroy Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe raised their three children on the ranch near Gilroy. In addition to managing his prune ranches and dehydrator business, Mr. Wolfe owned a water well drilling business. He was noted throughout southern Santa Clara County for his drilling expertise. He spent much of his spare time inventing and then building his inventions. He was very proud of a thank-you letter he received from the United States Government for a new gun sight invention that he had submitted, that the government subsequently applied and used during World War II. He was an avid “rock-hound.” He and his wife traveled across the United States in pursuit of his hobby. He loved cutting and polishing rocks, making gifts for family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe retired to Paradise in 1976 until April of last year when they relocated to Riverside. Mr. Wolfe is survived by his children, Denton Wolfe of Gridley, Gwen Thomas of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Doris Thompson of Paradise, six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. His wife of 77 years, Ruth; two sisters, Mildren Fowler and Inez Blackstone; brother, Ernest Wolfe, and his grandson, James Thompson preceded him in death. Leonard Spesert June 27, 1917 - Feb. 2, 2002 Leonard Spesert, 84, worked as a checker for Miller, Witt’s and Wentz Markets in Chico, and later worked as a custodian for California State University, Chico. He also worked and retired from, the Army Corps of Engineers in 1979. During this time he had a cattle ranch since 1957, and also a chicken ranch in Paradise from 1959 to 1965. He was born in Wheeling, W. Va., to Willis and Jecca Spesert. Mr. Spesert attended Chico schools and graduated from Chico High School. In 1978, he marriage Marilyn Hensley in Reno, Nev. Mr. Spesert was a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Paradise; sons, Leonard Spesert Jr. of Beaverton, Ore., Dennis Alan Spesert of El Sobrante, Michael David Spesert of Chico and Gary Spesert of Paradise; brother, Howard Roy Spesert of Coweta, Okla.; two sisters, Helen Finely of Chico and Mickey Davy, also of Chico, three stepsons, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was born in Anderson, to Jim and Pauline Callas. Mrs. Carr is survived by her son, Alfred B. Carr; daughters, Pauline Carr of Paradise and Catherine Millens of Virginia; sisters, Ruth Jackman and Julie Hale of Redding, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews throughout North-ern California and Oregon. Ray Kent 1923 - Feb. 7, 2002 Ray Kent passed away Feb. 7, in Lords Valley, Pa., of colon cancer. He was 78. In March 2001 he had radical colon surgery and subsequently underwent six months of chemotherapy. Mr. Kent and his wife of 52 years, Mary Kent, moved to Paradise Pines in 1981 and only recently relocated to Pennsylvania to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Mr. Kent was an outstanding tennis player and was a fixture at the Paradise High School courts and at the tennis courts in Paradise Pines. He won numerous tournaments in Paradise and at the Chico Racquet Club. He learned to play tennis at a very young age from two Filipino men at the Hollywood YMCA. Playing on the tennis team at John Marshall High School, he had the opportunity to compete against Jack Kramer and other stalwarts of the day. In the 1960s and 1970s Mr. Kent lived in Costa Mesa and was one of the top players in the area. His son Steve is the tennis professional at Lords Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania. Mr. Kent’s older son, Gordon, owns New England Tennis Camp and runs a large junior program at Roosevelt Island Racquet Club in New York City. Ray grew up in the Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s. His father was president of Fox West Coast Theatres and his uncle was president of Twentieth Century Pictures. In 1940, Mr. Kent dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Marine Corps with his brother, Bill. He served in the South Pacific and left the Corps in 1945 as a master technical sergeant. For a time in the late ’40s, he worked for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as an officer and as a prison guard. He met his wife, Mary, in 1949 and they were marriage in 1950 in California. With their young son Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. Kent moved to Pittsburgh in 1951. In 1962, Mr. Kent moved his family back to California and spent almost 20 years working for the Post Office in Newport Beach, retiring in 1980. Mr. and Mrs. Kent lived in Paradise Pines from 1981 until their move to Pennsylvania in late 2000. They were both active in the community association in Paradise Pines. In addition to Mr. Kent’s tennis, both Mr. and Mrs. Kent were avid golfers and bridge players. Charles Howze May 19, 1922 - Feb. 14, 2002 Charles W. Howze, 79, was born in Atlantic City, N.J. He died at Feather River Hos-pital in Paradise after a lengthy illness. Betty Wallgren Nov. 3, 1920 - Feb. 14, 2002 Betty Maxine Wallgren, 81, was raised and attended schools in Clay, Ohio. Mrs. Wall-gren was born in Clay to Herman and Florence Harris. She marriage Walter Wallgren on Feb. 14, 1963 in San Bernardino and a homemaker the majority of her life. She moved to Paradise in 1978 from Anaheim. Mrs. Wallgren enjoyed crafts and made stuffed clowns. She was an avid bingo player and was known at many bingo halls in Paradise, Chico and Oroville. Her son, Wayne “Buster” DeTillion, preceded her in death in 1998. Mr. London was marriage for 30 years to Colletta London. He was an excellent artist and loved to read. His wife, Colletta Condon of Paradise and his good friend, Kenny Olson, survive him. Catherine Borgquist Jan. 5, 1915 - Feb. 16, 2002 Catherine Mae Borgquist, 87, was a member of Elks Wives Paradise Lodge, PTA, Alter Guild of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and was a very active church member. Mrs. Borgquist was born in Harrisburg, Ill., to Fred and Nellie Ward. She was in real estate for 10 years and worked as an administrative assistant in the public school system in Los Angeles County for 10 years. Mrs. Borgquist moved to California 68 year ago and met her husband, Carl Borgquist, at Good Samaritan Hospital where they both worked at the time. She was a loving mother of three sons. Janet Sharpnack Oct. 13, 1932 - Feb. 13, 2002 Janet Edith Sharpnack, 69, was employed as an administrative secretary for 36 years for the City of Chico. She was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Orley Buchanan Woodcox and Janet Rosalie Steinbacher. Mrs. Sharpnack graduated from San Fernando High in 1950, and marriage Alan Sharpnack in 1963. A member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church Legion of Mary, and the St. Thomas More Catholic Church choir, she also enjoyed oil painting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, square dancing, singing and stained glass. She was a devoted daughter, and helped her mother take care of six siblings. As a mother, she in turn was devoted to her own two daughters, and grandmother to five grandsons. Harold Seabright Jan. 31, 1907 - Feb. 13, 2002 Harold William Seabright, 95, started working at the age of 14 with the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He moved on to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper as their circulation supervisor. From there, he moved to Long Beach for 10 years and opened his own dry cleaning business called Seabright Cleaners. Ten years later, he moved to Paradise and sold real estate for 5 years until his retirement in 1980. Born in Terre Haute, Ind., to Charles and Dorthea Seabright, Mr. Seabright enjoyed gardening and especially liked needlepoint work. He also he made many handmade rugs. He was a past president of Harbor Dry Cleaners Association in Long Beach, a member of Rotary Inter-national of Long Beach and Lions Club of Long Beach. Mr. Seabright is survived by his wife of 73 years, Marguerite Seabright of Magalia, whom he marriage in 1927; daughters, Joyce Rose of Salem, Ore., Lois Rockman of Long Beach, and Ann Spivey of Elk Grove, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Michele Richardson Jan. 15, 1971 - Feb. 6, 2002 Michele (Dean) Richardson, 31, died at her home from a massive aneurysm. A graduate of Paradise High School in 1989, she was also a wife and mother, as well as a university student. She was born in Misawa, Japan, to James and Jayne Dean. Mrs. Richardson marriage Daniel Richardson, Nov. 25, 1989 in Paradise. Mrs. Richardson was a member of the Parent Teachers Association, volunteered at Highland Elementary School, where a new playground will be dedicated in her name. Helping children and friends was a major part of her life, and she enjoyed gardening, baking, soccer, organizing children and town events. She was studying health, promotions and fitness at Southern Oregon University with a 4.0 GPA and was to do her graduate work this year. Her peers and professors at the university voted her to a lifelong woman’s sorority. The university had a memorial and dedication ceremony honoring her and all her accomplishments. Betty Fife Dec. 9, 1921 - Feb. 18, 2002 Betty Ann Fife, 80, was a longtime resident of Paradise and was born in Bakersfield to Labrun and Zina Pathe, early Utah settlers. She was a longtime resident of Gridley. Mrs. Fife was also a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in many positions including a full-time mission with her husband, Don Fife, to Ireland in 1977. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Mrs. Fife died on Feb. 18 at the Laurel Creek Health Care Center in Fairfield of natural causes. Her loving husband, Donald Stewart Fife, preceded Mrs. Fife in death in 1995. Her sons, Gary Donald Fife of Gridley and Dennis L. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Joan Lyding Bell June 18, 1919 - February 18, 2002 Joan Lyding Bell, the beloved wife of James Glenn Bell and cherished mother of Daniel and Jeffrey Bell, fell asleep in death on February 18, 2002. She is also survived by her brother, John D. Lyding, Jr., her sister, Elizabeth Lyding Will, and James' brothers Edward and Orten, along with many nieces and nephews. Joan was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 18, 1919. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Chicago, while also working as a professional model. Joan and Jim were marriage on May 30, 1942. They moved to California in 1947, where they reared their sons. In 1974, they relocated to Paradise, California. Joan maintained a life-long interest in health and nutrition. Moreover, for the past 50 years, she devoted herself to sharing with others her deeply held faith in God and the Bible. Joan especially enjoyed attending Bible conventions and visiting her countless friends, which took her to at least 21 countries in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Throughout her long final illness, she was sustained by her firm conviction that in the near future God would resurrect her into a peaceful New World. Though Joan will be sorely missed, her enthusiasm for life and her love of people will be remembered by everyone who knew her. George Kracht Dec. 27, 1930 - Feb. 7, 2002 George Edwin Kracht retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of service. In 1973, he and his family moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where he was employed by the Lutheran Good Samaritan Society at the Laniolu Retirement Home and he later went to work in sales. Mr. Kracht also attended Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu. He and his wife, Mrs. Kracht, moved to Paradise in 1985, where he worked for Eagle Security Systems in Chico, until he retired in 1993. He returned to live in Hawaii in 1988. Mr. Kracht loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in Kailua-Kona Hawaii and Paradise Lutheran Church. He enjoyed attending Bible study classes, participating in church dramas and helping wherever he could at his church. He also loved to dance and was a member of the Elks and former member of Chefs de Cuisine in Honolulu. He died Feb. 7, at Kona Community Hospital in Hawaii. Mr. Kracht was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y. to Carl D. Kracht and Alice Cerswell Kracht. He marriage Evelyn J. Ricketts in 1951. She died in 1995. He is survived by his sons, Michael of Yokosuka, Japan and Kevin of Austin, Texas; daughters, Dawnelle Kelley of Chico and Kristen Blackburn of Oakley; sister, Kathryn King of Fort Meade, Fla., and a brother, Kenneth Kraft of Millsboro, Del.; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his fiancée, Elaine Weaver of Honalo, Kona, Hawaii. Richard Roach Nov. 15, 1937 - Feb. 20, 2002 Richard “Dick” Roach worked for the federal government as a helicopter mechanic for 32 years before retirement. He attended schools in Pasadena and graduated from Chico High. Mr. Roach was born in Tucson, Ariz., to Jesse and Leona Roach, and died of natural causes at his place of resident in Magalia. He was 64 years old. He was a United States Marine from 1955 until his discharge in 1959. Mr. Roach marriage his wife, Vicki, in 1984 in Las Vegas. He was a member of Bidwell Golf Course and loved to play with his brothers. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening and was handy with mechanical things. Mr. Roach is survived by his wife, Vicki of Magalia; sons, Don Roach of Borego Springs, and Warren Lee Roach of South Carolina; daughters, Debra Trohan of South Carolina and Delores Miller of Ohio; two brothers, Bob Roach and Wayman Roach, both of Chico and four grandchildren. Margaret Schoof May 3, 1919 - Feb. 20, 2002 Margaret Mae Schoof, or “Marge,” as her friends knew her, enjoyed crafts, gardening and loved to arrange ornaments in her lawn and garden. She was employed as a manager for a dry cleaning business. Mrs. Schoof was born in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Virgle and Frances Dooley. She died at Feather River Hospital at the age of 82. Her husband of 55 years, Robert Schoof; son, Ronald Schoof of Tracy, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive her. DeWayne Sickler July 4, 1915 - Feb. 21, 2002 DeWayne Alden Sickler was born on the Fourth of July in Fairmont, Minn., to Ella and Chester Sickler. He was the eldest of three children, and spent his early years in White Bear Lake, Minn. After graduation from White Bear Lake High School, he moved to Seattle, where he began a career in the aircraft industry. Beginning as a riveter, he worked his way up to foreman and electronics planner, working for Boeing Aircraft Co. in the Seattle area and later at the Alameda Navel Base and Lockheed-Martin in the Bay area before retiring in 1978. In 1937, Mr. Sickler marriage his high school sweetheart, Maxine Coleman, also from White Bear Lake. The couple moved to their present home in Magalia in 1979. Mr. Sickler was a devoted husband and father, past member of Table Mountain Masonic Lodge, and with his wife, was instrumental in starting the Paradise Gleaners. In his youth, he became an avid golfer. He was a caddy at the age of 9 and filled in for the pro at his local golf course one summer during high school. He played high school football and basketball and participated in track events, including javelin, shotput and sprint. Mr. Sickler remained an enthusiastic golfer, and in later years also became an accomplished woodworker, especially enjoying his wood lathe. He was a handyman husband who prided himself on keeping everything in good repair. Mr. Sickler died on Feb. 21 after a 17-year battle with recurrent strokes. He was 86. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxine; sons, Richard of Felton and Steven of Green Bay, Wis.; niece Margaret Ford of Chico, three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and close family friend Randy Blowers of Magalia. Memorial services will be held at the Paradise United Methodist Church, 6722 Clark Road at 2 p.m. Saturday. Miriam Self Aug. 4, 1917 - Feb. 19, 2002 Miriam Ethel Self was a nurse for 30 years at the Chilton Memorial Hospital. She served in World War II in the United States Navy as a pharmacist’s mate. Mrs. Self was born in Atlanta, Ga., to McNealey and Ruth Davis, and in 1945 she marriage Gene Self, in Norman, Okla. Mrs. Self passed away at the age of 84. Her husband, Gene Self of Oroville; son, James E. Self of Chico; daughters, Ruth Anne Beatty, Marilyn Louise Perotti, Kathrine Jean Seales; five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren survive her. Henry Fahl May 1, 1924 - Feb. 21, 2002 Born on a farm near Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Henry “Bud” Fahl, marriage Edith Arnst in 1948, and the couple moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1956. He retired to Magalia in 1984 after working in the moving and storage business for 28 years. Mr. Fahl was very active at Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and as an usher. He also worked as a volunteer with the Bible Braille book. He died on Feb. 21 at a local hospital. His wife of 53 years, Edith “Edie” Fahl of Magalia; sons, Thomas Fahl of Bloomingdale, Ill., Mark Fahl of Magalia; daughter, Julie McCollumn of Shevlin, Minn.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive him. Michael Motzkus June 28, 1959 - Feb. 16, 2002 As an avid outdoorsman, Michael Edward Motzkus could be found in the Feather River, camping and panning for gold. When he got tired of panning, he would start fishing. He also loved to go rock hunting with his family. He was born to Edward and Mildren Motzkus and died at the age of 42. Mr. Motzkus worked for the Paradise Recreation and Parks District for 16 years. His wife, Kelly Motzkus; mother, Mildren Motzkus; sister, Bea O’Donnal of Idaho; 11-year-old son, Mason Motzkus and 14-year-old daughter, Cassie Motzkus, both of Paradise, survive him, Memorial services will be held Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Terry Ashe Recreation and Park District on Skyway in Paradise. His family, friends and co-workers are invited to celebrate his life and bring their memories of Mr. Motzkus. It is also requested they wear bright colors. Rose Chapel Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Waunita Brickman Dec. 26, 1915 - Feb. 26, 2002 Waunita Brickman moved to Paradise four years ago from Moreno Valley. She was a member of the Upper Ridge Seventh-day Adventist Church. Mrs. Brickman enjoyed needlework and ceramics, but her main hobby was catering to her grandchildren. She was born in Enid, Okla., to John and Kathleen Melvin. She died at her home at the age of 86. Her husband predeceased her. Her daughters, Joyce Wass of Addison, Maine and Delores Hamilton of Paradise; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren survive her. There will be no services. Chin March 10, 1930 - Feb. 26, 2002 H.K. “Jake” Chin was born in Honolulu to Yun Chul and Sokai Chin. He retired from the United States Air Force after serving 29 years. Mr. Chin graduated from California State University, Sacramento. He was a member of California Veterans Square Dance Association, Paradise Elks No. 2026, and Paradise Pines Golf Club. Mr. Chin also enjoyed fishing, golfing and square dancing. He died at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Joy Chin of Magalia; daughters, Debra Baker of Paradise and Diane Dubberley of Turlock; son, Donald Chin of Chico; brothers, Donald and Sung Kyu Chin; sisters, Lily Shulting, Mary Welch and Violet Moon, and four grandchildren. Robert Blackwell March 18, 1928 - Feb. 22, 2002 Robert D. Blackwell graduated in 1955 from Oklahoma City University with a bachelor of science degree in electronics. He then worked in the service department and retired as a programmer after 33 years for IBM He was born in Calvin, Okla., to Robert and Thelma Blackwell, and enjoyed fishing and working in his yard. He helped to build the Newcastle United Methodist Church in Newcastle, Okla. He was a member of the Paradise United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 221 in Calvin, Okla., and was very active in Boy Scout Troop No. 72 of Oklahoma City. He and his wife were also associated with Grandparents as Parents of Paradise to their grandchildren Corrine and Gabriel. Mr. Blackwell died at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife June Blackwell of Paradise, whom in marriage in 1980; sons, Robert Jr. of Citrus Heights, Roger of Colorado Springs, Colo., Alan Clark and Bob Clark, both of Phoenix; daughters, Viola Puschaver of Paducah, Ky., Linda Clark of North Hollywood, Kathleen Staley of Vancouver, Wash., Pamela Hildebrant of Apache Junction, Ariz., Sandra Gaff of Springfield, Ore., and Anita Turk of Phoenix; mother, Thelma Blackwell of Calvin, Okla., and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary “Jackie” Blackwell, his brother, Lewis and sister, Peggy Thompson. Douglas Cozad May 4, 1951 - Feb. 22, 2002 Douglas Keith Cozad was a Pacific Bell lineman for 20 years. He died at the age of 50. Mr. Cozad was born to Harlan Keith Cozad and Dorothy Farwell. Paul Bracklow Oct. 10, 1918 - Feb. 24, 2002 Moving to Paradise from Anaheim, Paul Emil Bracklow served as a warrant officer during World War II and the Korean War, and received the good conduct medal for honorary service. He died at the age of 83 after an extended illness. Mr. Bracklow was born in Krakou, Germany, to Emil and Antonia Bracklow, and marriage Lucille Carolyn Fitzgerald in 1943 in Massachusetts. He was an electronics engineer for Rockwell International for over 42 years. Mr. Bracklow was a member of Paradise First Assembly of God Church, where he was very active and past member of Full Gospel Men. He was a devoted Christian during his life. He loved trains, especially steam locomotives. He had a license for steam and diesel engines operation for ships, and enjoyed visiting lighthouses. His wife, “Geri” Bracklow of Paradise; daughter, Linda Wise of Baltimore, Md.; sons, John Bracklow of Fieldbrook, David Bracklow of Chandler, Ariz., adopted sons, Edward and Peter of Southern California, and three grandchildren survive him. Marlene Shultz Sept. 10, 1925 - Feb. 26, 2002 Marlene Ozella Shultz was born in Oklahoma to James and Mary Etta Ellis. She died at her home at the age of 77. Her husband, Frank Shultz, predeceased her in 1998. She is survived by her son, James Shultz of Whittier; daughters, Judy Buck and Evelyn Beard; brothers, Arthur Ellis of Washington, James Ellis of Paradise, Leonard Ellis and Tom Ellis, both of Tuolomne; sisters, Mary Bartlett of Lodi and Claudine Yancy of Texas, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. She will be laid to rest at the Paradise Cemetery beside her late husband, Frank Shultz. Jerry Heath Feb. 5, 1944 - Feb. 22, 2002 Jerry McKinley Heath was born in Sparks, Md., and died Feb. 22 at the age of 58. He served in the United States Navy and was employed by Pacific Bell for almost 34 years while living in Napa. He was a member of Moose Lodge No. 2227, Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, SIRS Branch 135, and the American Legion, all of Paradise. Mr. Heath was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing golf. He is survied by his wife Susanne Heath of Magalia; children, Jerry Wayne Heath and Regina Marie Heath, both of Napa; stepdaughter, Kimberly Warren of Middletown; two grandchildren; mother, Edith Heath; brothers, Billy, David, Robert and Ronnie Heath; sisters, June Carrier and Linda Tudar, all of Maryland nad Pennsylvania. Williams enjoyed fishing and hunting, and spent many years farming before he retired, and died at 88. He was born in Santa Paula, and moved to Paradise in 1986 from Ventura County. He marriage his wife, Betty, in Las Vegas in 1972. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Betty Williams of Paradise; son, Steven Williams of Alabama; daughter, Donna Miller of Camarillo, and several grandchildren. There are no services planned. A private cremation will take place at the Chapel of the Pines Mortuary. Mae L. Curtis July 11, 1920 - March 28, 2002 Mae L. Curtis was born in Minnesota and died at her own resident in Magalia at 81. She was a homemaker the majority of her life, and enjoyed reading; music and spending time with her family. Mrs. Curtis was preceded in death by her husband Leon Curtis in 1995 and her daughter, Shirly in 1999. She is survived by her daughters, Mikki Lusk of Magalia and Carol Rose of Oroville; sons, Donald Lusk of Minneapolis, and Dennis Lusk of Oroville; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob Keene Feb. 24, 1917 - March 27, 2002 A heavy equipment operator for over 50 years, Bob Vernon Keene, was with the Operating Engineers Union, and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was born in Las Vegas, N.M. to James and Lydia Keene. He died at 85 in Paradise. Mr. Keene moved to Magalia in the 1970s from Southern California and enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He is survived by his wife Ollie "Pat" Keene of Magalia; son, Bobby Keene of Missouri; daughter, Sandra Sue Oakes of Carpinteria; brothers, Wayne of Oroville, Donald and Frohman, both of Arizona; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Donna Levrant Dec. 25, 1945 - March 29, 2002 Donna Carol Levrant was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. to Ronald and Marilyn Duckworth. She was a homemaker and enjoyed trips to the local casinos. She died of natural causes at 56. Helga Melgar May 7, 1918 - March 29, 2002 Helga Ruth Melgar received her education at the Univer-sity of Stuttgart in Germany, majoring in physical education. She came to San Francisco in 1940 to study physical therapy at Stanford University where she graduated in 1942. Mrs. Melgar established her own business in physical therapy in the Bay area and the Peninsula. She marriage Frank A. Melgar in 1943 in San Francisco and moved to Paradise in 1978. She continued her career at Feather River Hospital until her retirement in 1986. She was born in Sweden to Paul and Valerie Roos, and died at her home in Roseville at 83. She is survived by her husband, Frank Melgar of Roseville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. No services are planned at this date. A private cremation will take place at the Chapel of the Pines Mortuary. Roger Chambers Aug. 10, 1939 - March 29, 2002 Roger W. Chambers was an auto repairman for mufflers in Paradise, Chico, and Oroville for 20 years. He was born in Brookings, S.D., to Wyman and Lelia Chambers Mr. Chambers was marriage in San Jose to Kay Sanders in 1959. They divorced in 1998. He had lived in Paradise since 1977. He served in the United States Army, and California Army Reserve. Mr. Chambers enjoyed boating, gardening, auto racing; was a businessman, and built super-modified race cars. He is survived by his father, Wyman Chambers of San Jose; daughter, Kristin Chambers of New Castle; sons, Kelly Chambers, and Kirk Chambers of Paradise, and Cory Chambers of Yankee Hill; brother, Steven Chambers of San Jose; sisters, Cheryl Bundlie, and Cynthia Sobel, both of San Jose; seven grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Church of Christ, San Jose, and a memorial celebration will be held in Paradise at a later date. He will be buried icon in the National Cemetery. Ralph Dorville Oct. 5, 1944 - March 27, 2002 A prominent figure in Paradise Little League for more than 30 years, Ralph Leland Dorville was instrumental in the acquisition of the land and the construction of Egleson Field. His dedication to all the kids involved in Little League was inspirational to many. Little League team, Paradise South Astros, is dedicating this year's season to him, and wearing a special patch on its uniforms with the initials "R.D." in memory. He was born in Sacramento, and marriage Lorene Fuller in Reno, Nev., in 1963. Mr. Dorville worked at Aero Union as a purchaser for 14 years, and died at the age of 57. He is survived by his wife, Lorene Dorville of Paradise; son, Dennis Dorville of Paradise; daughter, Denise of Canoga Park; two grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Barker of Paradise; brothers, Robert of Galt and Ronald of Modesto, and his mother, Goldie Eckert, of Paradise. A celebration of his life will be held at Egleson Field on Buschmann Road in Paradise on Monday at 12 noon. Donations may be made in his memory to Paradise Little League South, at Butte Community Bank in Mr. Dorville's name for the continued support of one of his life's passions. George Mackay April 6, 1916 - March 26, 2002 Graduating from Los Angeles City College, George Remme Raymond MacKay, furthered his education attending California State University, Chico, attaining a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, an equivalent in art, and a master's degree in secondary education. He was a past president of Theta Psi, and a vice president of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education. He was a visualization specialist at the television services center, and also taught sculpting and graphic design in the art department. He lived with his grandmother, Clara A. Schel, in San Francisco before moving to Long Beach, where he received his early education. Mr. MacKay attended Pacific Bible Seminary and was ordained, serving as children's chaplain at Los Angeles County General Hospital and several hospitals in Los Angeles County. He marriage the former Arleda Joyce Remington in 1942 in Long Beach and lived in Hollywood and Altadena before moving to Paradise where they had been living since 1954. At an early, age he was given national recognition and an award from Proctor and Gamble for his soap carving "Unicorn." He had been a commercial artist, medical illustrator and sculptor to the trade. On his retirement, his great interest was in discovering the connection between personality and behavior in relation to violence and crime. He invented, and was a patent owner of the Personality Assessment Instrument and did considerable research and testing. Mr. MacKay was born in Oakland to George E.F. and Grace and died of natural causes in Paradise at 85. His wife, Arleda of Paradise and his nephew and niece survive him. She moved to Paradise in 1991 from Escondido, and died at 98 in Paradise. At 18, she met and marriage Mr. Fullride and her only child, Harold, was born the following year. She and her husband loved to dance, and would attend dances in Santa Cruz. He died suddenly in 1957. She spent a year in Paris, and toured many of the European countries. After returning to the states, she met Mr. Blew as they had both gone to leave flowers on their spouse's graves. They fell in love and were marriage within six months. Mr. Blew died in 1980. Mrs. Blew owned and operated her own beauty salon for 35 years in Southern California. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Paradise 1st Ward. Her niece, Marjorie Hagist of Pittsburg, survives her. There will be no services at her request. She will be buried icon at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto.
