Brief Biography of Thomas O'Connor

Thomas G. O’Connor owned the property known as Lot 2, Block 58 in the Prospect Hill area of Nevada City in the 1880’s. He resided on the part of the land that fronting on Nimrod Street. It is possible that he also built a dwelling on Clay Street, for the 1883 Birdseye View map shows such a structure.

His wife was Julia and their children were: Thomas Gerald, Jr., Charles Francis, James Clarence, Annie Cecilia and Mary Marcella.

Thomas died as a young man in 1885. His obituary was published under the headline: “Death of T. G. O’Connor” ( Obituary of Thomas O’Connor: Nevada Transcript, 20 Oct 1885, page 3, Column 1). It described him as a well-known wood dealer in the county. It states that he had been ill with Bright’s Disease for a long time. His remains were removed from his home on Nimrod Street and taken to Grass Valley where his funeral was held at the Catholic Church.

Thomas O’Connor had come to Nevada City from Grass Valley two years prior. Thomas G. O’Connor had supplied wood to the Idaho Mining Company. Nevada County death records show that several of his children also died in Nevada County: Charles F, 31 Oct 1911, Annie C. 12 April 1894 and Thomas Gerald O’Connor, Jr., 27 May 1926.
