Notes for Bart Leonard Topping:

Article – Fresno Bee, October 27, 2011:

Madera County Cattlemen’s Association name Bart and Tracy Topping 2011 Cattleman of the Year and Cowboy of the year.

Madera County Cat- Association recently announced this Cattleman winners: 2011 Cattleman of the Year: Bart Topping

Nominated and elected by past honorees, the Cattleman of the Year award recognizes an individual that has contributed and been influential in the cattle industry in Madera County. The recipients will be honored at the association’s Fall Dinner 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the Coarsegold Community Center.

Bart was born to Leonard and Jane (Ruether) Topping on a rainy election day, June 6, 1950. He came home to the Topping Ranch in the Hildreth area of to the home of his grandparents, Delores and Carmelita (Romero) Topping. Later, he moved with his parents to the home they built where they raised he and his sister.

Bart grew up in the cattle business and made it his livelihood and work. After learning the business from his family, he worked while going to school at Fresno State for Morgan Blasingame, who ran mostly yearlings on his ranch east of Clovis. While living and working on the Blasingame Ranch, he married his wife Cindy (Corlew). Their children, Owen and Jessica (Jones) also born while he worked there.

He later took a job with Fresno State as the beef herdsman on the San Joaquin Experimental Range in Coarsegold, then moved with his family to return to the Topping Ranch where he helped his father with cattle. After death, he continued to manage the ranch and continues to today.

The U.S. Forest Service summer season grazing permits in the Beasore Meadow area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains have been a vital part of the management for two generations of Toppings.

In the early summer the cows and calves are trucked from O’Neals to Bass Lake and then a one-day cattle drive brings the cattle to the area of the permits. In recent years, Bart has been joined on these drives by his grandchildren, the fifth generation of Toppings, Tyler, Cade, Trent and Taylor. In the fall, the cattle are gathered from the forest, and the one- day cattle drive is repeated in reverse to Bass Lake and then they are trucked to the Topping Home Ranch.

Bart has chosen to preserve his ranch and heritage by implementing a conservation easement on the table top area of the ranch.

He is a past member of the Spring Valley (now known as Chawanakee) School Board, a past director of the Sierra Foothill Conservancy and past director of the Madera County Cattlemen’s Association.

He currently serves on the Lands Committee and Beef Committee of the Sierra Foothill Conservancy. He is also the managing partner of the Minarets Pack Station and was honored at the Bishop Mule Days as Honored in 2008.

2011 Cowboy of the Year: Tracy Topping

Tracy started working with horses and cattle as a cowboy at 1-years-old while riding in front of her mother, taking cattle to the high country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. mother and father, Helen and Orin Harris, ran a 700 head operation near Bishop.

Alongside her parents, she has performed almost every job on the ranch. Tracy owned her first horse at the age 3, who she named Baldy. Tracy’s love of the high country began with moving the cattle each summer to the grazing permit areas and returning them in the fall. In her life, she has never spent a summer outside of the mountains.

Tracy worked for Meadow Pack Station for 11 years. Through her job with Red’s Meadow she met her husband, Owen Topping, in 1998 on a pack trip when she had to detour through the Minarets area due to bad weather. Owen’s persistence prevailed and he finally convinced her to marry him in 2000. They now have two children, a son Cade, age 6 and a daughter, Taylor, age 4. Tracy and Owen have a cow / calf operation near O’Neals and Tracy currently works with the Topping family conducting pack trips at Minarets Pack Station near Yosemite.
