INTRODUCTORY

    In presenting this, the first edition of the Madera City Directory, we feel that to the citizens of Madera as well as to ourselves, the work represents a source of some pride.
    All information for the city has been secured through personal house to house canvass by men carefully trained in this work. Names, initials, occupations and other data ‘have been thoroughly verified in every possible way and every effort made to avoid errors and omissions.
    Particular attention is directed to the Directory of Householders, or House Guide. We feel that in placing this information at your disposal we have made the directory invaluable to everyone in every kind of business in Madera.
    We extend our thanks to the people of Madera for their uniform courtesy to our solicitors in quest of information and to the merchants for their generous advertising patronage, which we trust is well deserved and will prove a good investment.

MADERA

    Madera is the county seat of Madera County, it is located on the main line of the Southern Pacific, 185 miles south of San Francisco, 299 miles north of Los Angeles. The main line of the Santa Fe Railway runs within two miles of the business section of the city, the Santa Fe station being Storey. The State Highway follows one of the city streets through the city and crosses Madera County from the northwest to the southeast. The scenic stage road to the Yosemite Valley and the “Mariposa Big Trees” originate at Madera. Madera County is noted as one of the largest and the most productive of the grain growing sections of California. It is famous for its lumbering, forests and quarries. Many of the finest buildings of the State being built with Raymond granite.
    The City of Madera is located in the center of the valley section of the County and very near to the geographical center of the State. Its lumbering, farming, fruit growing and manufacturing industries are important.
    The Madera Sugar Pine Flume is the second longest in the world.
    The Thurman Door Factory at Madera is the most extensive lumber manufacturing plant in the San Joaquin Valley.
    The Italian Swiss Colony winery near Madera is one of the largest sweet wineries in the world.
    Since the taking of the last census three years ago Madera’s population has increased over thirty per cent.
    Building improvements have kept pace with the growth of business and population.
    The City of Madera has its own water and sewer systems.
    The Madera schools are not excelled by those of any city in the State. The Lincoln Grammar School at Madera was recently awarded first prize over all school buildings west of the Rocky Mountains in a contest conducted by State Superintendent Hyatt.
    Nine of the leading religious denominations have churches at Madera. Ten of the principal lodges are represented.
    The city is well built and attractive. It furnishes exceptional opportunities to home seekers and investors.
